16:9 help

I dont have a DVX.... yet! But my current Cam has a 16:9 Squeeze mode. Now i was wondering, when you guys use the squeeze, or even the ANA Adaptor, how do you treat it in post? do you correct it in to a letterboxed out put on a 4:3, or do you leave it in the squeezed mode and project/Display it in the correct aspect ratio? (on the 16:9 tv's that stretch a 4:3 signal)

i am trying to figure out the best way to use the 16:9 that my cam is capable of, cause it is actually is a real 16:9 not just cropping, the field of view actually widens several degrees on both sides of the 4:3 field of view.

I just wanna know how you guys treat it.

Thank you.

Re: 16:9 help

If it's squeezed, drop it into a 16:9 timeline, your NLE will recognize it and correct it.

Re: 16:9 help

Hmmm i dont think My Editing program is cool enough to have a 16:9 timeline. Its a cheap program. Thank you though.

But lets just say it did have one, what would be the result? like what does that do to the footage?

Re: 16:9 help

It would "unsqueeze" it, and conform it to the 16:9 aspect ratio.

Re: 16:9 help

It might be worth mentioning that if you "unsqueeze" the image yourself, you should probably reduce its height (rather than increase its width) to the correct aspect ratio.

This is because downsampling (shrinking) an image generally produces far better results than interpolating it to a higher resolution. If you think about it, that makes sense.

Re: 16:9 help

Oh geez, it never even occured to me that someone might try to increase the width. Pais is right, don't do that!

Re: 16:9 help

oh no, never. My editing program wont let you do that really. But you can compress it vertically to make it 16:9, its just hard because theres not automatic ratio tool. Like you cant tell it to compress theimage to 16:9 from 4:3 you have to do each scene by hand, or edit, then trnandsport to DV deck as one file, then re capture, compress the Video, and burn to DVD.... sTupid "MAGIX, movie Edit pro"

Re: 16:9 help

yea it does, its just annoying. i got to get Premier, or Vegas... I hear, (no real evidence just what someone described it as) Movie edit Pro, is supposed to be based on Vegas' style of controls and editing, so atleast i might be alittel more familiar with it.

Re: 16:9 help

now The Editing program i have has this feature where you manually punch in the dimentions you want your video to be, 720x480 640X480 ETC.... Whats the pixel dimentions of 16:9 letterboxed on a 4:3.... so far 720X360 looks pretty good, but i wanted to know what the correct number was. Thanks you guys.

Well, the number 16:9 represents the aspect ratio of the image -- that is, the ratio between the width and height is 16 to 9.

To compute the appropriate height, bust out your elementary algebra skillz:

16/9 = 720/x

There are many ways to solve for x ... but the short answer is that x = 405. :)

Re: 16:9 help

funny thing is i tried that... but it looked funny... so thought there was a magic number.... I guesswhen it burns to DVD it corrects itself

Re: 16:9 help

720x480 footage will play back in 4:3 if the DVD is encoded to play 4:3 material, and will play back in 16:9 if the DVD is encoded respectively.

DV doesn't use square pixels, so depending on what shape you tell your player the pixels should be, your frames can be in different aspect ratios while retaining the same pixel count (720x480)
