16:9 Aspect

Hi all - I've recently finished editing a short film, shot on 16:9. I now need to get it on to DVD, but in the past when I've done it (using Nero or the export in Premiere) the aspect ratio doesn't stay the same - it comes out stretched to fit the TV screen. I would much rather have black bars to keep the ratio and keep up the 'cinematic' look.

Any advice here is much appreciated. I'm not averse to getting my hands on other software if you suggest it.

Thanks

It depends what you are using to author. I know that when I used Adobe Encore DVD 1.5, I could never get it to do 16x9 unless I added letterbox stuff myself in the editing program and exported it as a 4:3 file. On the other hand, Encore DVD 2.0 has worked fine. I really suggest investing in this little thing as it's quite easy to use and fairly powerful. My workflow is to export a reference from Avid, then run it through a compressor to MPEG2, 720x480 non-square 16x9 pixels. Import this into Encore 2.0 and it should work fine. I havn't tried having Encore 2.0 encode something as a 16x9 MPEG2 itself but it's supposedly possible (though I wasn't able to do it with 1.5).

It depends on the MPEG2 encoder and not the authoring application unless they are one and the same. The encoder sets a flag indicating that the material in anamorphic 16:9 and depending on the DVD player's settings for the monitor attached will play back the appropriate aspect ratio.

Yes, I have the same problem with Encore 1.5. I have never been able to burn a 16:9 DVD that looked right, it was always vertically stretched to fit...Now I am looking for a DVD authoring alternative.

i don't know really anything about dvd authoring, so maybe this is a silly question, but:

i have DVD Studio Pro 3...will i be able to burn in 16:9?

thanks!
