16:9 anamorphic lens

Dear users

technically speaking, buying the AG-LA7200 anamorphic lens would create a better picture filming in 16:9 mode. Does someone use this lens and could tell me if you really see a difference compared to the "virtual" 16:9 mode?

Best regards from Germany

SQUEEZE mode is pretty darn good. I do notice a difference at the wide end with the 33% more viewing angle, however there is some barrel distortion. It is acceptable and the Anamorphic Lens is great for tight spaces and also for landscape shots. I do not use it all the time, just for those situations. I like to zoom in tight a lot and with the Anamorphic you have to stop down the iris for correct focus when zooming in to keep the focus in check. That, to me, is the only drawback since you have a very deep depth of field.

The 16 X 9 has some advantages mostly in the wide-angle range. I have noticed that a somewhat cleaner picture emerges when using the Anamorphic adapter indoors with artificial light, using the same lens outdoors presents some serious focusing issues in any range that you consider to be telephoto. I find focusing difficult unless I stop down the lens to the 5.6 or above F-stop, which, as you probably know, mitigates the depth-of-field somewhat. Also, used to for long shots, the lens gives blurry, light-rimmed artifacts to anything not in focus.

Used indoors, or in tight spots, the Anamorphic adapter is excellent.

Some important issues: no matte-box, so far as I know, is available for the Anamorphic lens, so only the internal ND settings will be availible for use, hence my preference for indoor use.

If you are a maniac, like me, however, you can use the Anamorphic lense in Squeeze mode and get true 2.35 to 1. I hear that Final Cut Pro supports this aspect ratio. In Avid, I have to plan to mask.
