15mm rods for M2

I am seriously considering purchasing a M2 adapter from Redrock Micro. On the web site the adapter is almost $300 less if you buy just the adapter with no rods. My question is, couldn't you just build the 15mm rod system your self, or is there a real reason that they cost so much?

Thanks,
TS

That's a good price. There's a reason it costs the amount it does. The rod system is what holds everything together, you don't want to take risks here by going the diy route. Unless you have access to a CNC machine or a flowjet or something, I'd just buy it. Not to mention its near impossible to find exactly 15mm rods cheap in the states. You want the standard 15 so you can use any standard accessory on them like a follow focus or mattebox.

ok then I guess thats what I would have to do, although I do have access to a lot of precision machinery...I guess I wouldn't want to take the chance.
Thanks,

The rods I've seen on high end base plates and matte boxes appear to be centerless ground to achieve accurate sizing and finish. If you have acess to a centerless grinder you could grind down some 5/8" steel tubing to 15mm ( .59055" ).
Or perhaps this company could help you out.

Hey TS,

Heres a thought. When I worked at Cinema Products there were matte box rods laying all over the place. Long ones, short ones etc. Don't know if you live near any rental houses, but mayby they could help you out. Or call Jerry Kosan at JBK Cinequip in Florida. Use to work with him at CP. He's a good guy and they make nice base plates and follow focus units. Tell him Chuck Colburn says hi.
