15" MBP + Cinema Display + Matrox MXO Questions

Question from somebody who's trying to do it all.

Can somebody explain how to use the Matrox MXO with a Macbook Pro and an 23" ACD? I'm trying to figure out the cheapest, highest quality way to monitor video without having to buy an NTSC video monitor or an AJA IO.

If I have the Matrox connected, will the ACD always be used to preview the video or will it only "become a broadcast monitor" when i turn on fcp's digital desktop preview?

I'm a bit confused as to how it will work because when I edit, I'm usually editing on my ACD. If I have the Matrox connected will I be forced to edit on my laptop display and preview only the ACD?

If somebody has an even cheaper solution, like connecting a regular CRT tv or something like that, please do tell! Basically I just want to be able to color correct and preview the final work before I burn or output my projects.

btw, I'm using FCP2 if thats relevant information. THANKS!

Once you have installed the Matrox MXO software, the Matrox will be available as a video output option (in several different formats) in FCP and many other applications, including Color and Motion. This is not the same thing as FCP's digital desktop option. If you do not select the Matrox as your video output, your ACD will act as a second computer monitor, even when connected to the MXO.

I would suggest that you take a look at the information on the Matrox site and download the MXO user manual. That should answer your questions. BTW, I assume you mean Final Cut Studio 2, not FCP2. I don't think the MXO will work with Final Cut Pro 2

What format is the video you are working with? options will be different between SD and HD.

I shoot with an XH-A1 so I work with both HDV and DV footage. 60i, 24F, 30F...If I'm previewing SD work, would I be able to utilize the laptop monitor as the color grading window or does Matrox only calibrate and output to the ACD?

I see. Then once I'm done cutting and ready to color grade I would select Matrox as my video output. I was trying to imagine being able to cut and preview work, just like how its always available on an NTSC monitor when you're editing in a suite.
My mistake! Yes, I meant Final Cut Studio 2. I did read over the website and downloaded the manual.
