14 year old girl to sail around the world.

Out in mid-ocean in a small vessel under a storm capable of dis-masting your boat with no crew and nearest rescue over 100 miles off is darned close to almost ending up dead.

And her experience won't make much difference dealing with a sufficiently powerful storm, or with friendly neighborhood pirates. Or getting run down in the night by a larger ship. Or appendicitis or some other disabling illness in mid-ocean. Or any of the other myriad problems a long-range solo sailor might have to deal with.

So yeah, drama. What she's proposing to attempt is pretty damned dramatic.

No it's not, far from being darned close actually. Technology allows almost anyone a good chance to be picked up in the matter of just a few days. She was fine, just drifting and waiting for the ship to pick her up.

My drama comment was in reference to Abby being demasted. Lots of drama about it.

Times have changed, when cars came out there were no anti lock brakes, seat belts, air bags, gps navigation in them and on and on. When you crashed you died. Same goes for boats, it was a difficult and dangerous thing to do way back when but not so much anymore. A sat phone and you'll be picked up sometimes in hours not days. As far has her being run over by a boat it'll never happen, technology can alert you to other ships 100 miles away, the pirate thing is no big deal, she will have a huge military escort like both Abby and Jessica had in the dangerous waters. I was single handing my parents 46' morgan 462 all over the caribbean when I was 13 with a sextant, no gps, no meteorologists giving me radio updates, granted it was just the caribbean but I did sail it to Panama one year when I was 17. She will be fine, her only concern will be the weather when going around the horn.

Hmm... if all that is true maybe it's no big deal... honestly that almost makes it sound more pointless in my book.

Well... if she doesn't make it I'm not going to come back and say "I told you so" to anybody who thinks this is a good idea. I hope she makes it. Daily life = risk.

I just don't think it's unreasonable to say it's NOT a good idea... and still think it's mostly the ego trip of a child. I'm sure many of the people armchair quarterbacking don't live in those armchairs, and take plenty of risks in their own lives... and are just expressing a risk analysis.

She very well might not make it, mechanical failures / demasts happen but she will not end up dead. No way will she end up dead.

*shrug* I skydive, motorcycle in LA traffic, earn a living in the entertainment business and eat shellfish out of season. I'm not risk-averse. And I don't even try to discourage other people from assuming what I might believe are frankly idiotic risks. But if I figure I see someone bucking for a Darwin, I'll say so.

+1

It's absolutely ridiculous for anyone to think that this isn't dangerous. I don't care what safety measures they take. If the ocean wants you, it will take you.

To be out there for that long, alone, and just a child? Crazy. The parents need their heads examined.

Isn't this the same girl who ran away or am I'm mixing her up with someone else?
Real mature. If she's the one that also shows who is running the show.
