13"MBP enough for FCP and H264?

So my MBP 15"2.16 C2D dies slowly.
I mean real slow.
Fried FW port (yes on the other end a HVX got fired...)
Still holding up for over a year since that happened, though.
But it freezes constantly, gets hot as hell and the fans are running riot randomly.
I don´t believe I NEED a mobile editing solution. Emails, writing, surfing, invoices is my primary laptop use.
But HDSLR may change the game and once in a while I might encounter a job suited for a 2ti and a same day on-location edit.
So if I go cheap and get the smallest unibody, will it be enough for such a task once in a while?
Or is there a general "best bang for the buck" version of the MBPs?
Thanks for any insight, maybe someone faced a similar decision lately and can help me out...

I've got a 13" MBP and use it pretty much exactly as you described. Email…web…writing…and the occasional transcoding and editing of 7D/5DII material.

It works just fine for quick, on-location work where there's not hours of material to transcode (into ProRes) and edit. If you have over an hour of footage to transcode and edit, you'll likely be disappointed in the speed, at least with Compressor. (MPEG Streamclip may be faster, but I haven't messed with it.)

So I'd say you'll be fine with the 13" MBP, as long as your expectations are reasonable.

I've got the 2.53Ghz C2D processor and 4GB of RAM. Definitely get as fast a processor as fits your budget and max out the RAM.
