12/18k Magnetic Ballast Weight

Hey all

Quick question here. After having worked with 18k Arri fresnels and their respective electronic ballasts, I'm wondering...how do magnetic ballasts compare in weight? The EB for an 18k is still quite heavy, and they both go on rolling carts anyway.

I'm mainly asking because I'm considering picking up an older magnetic 12/18k used at some point in the near future. It would be more cost effective than renting an Arri 18k for $800/day.

Something else to think about. I always keep at least one extra lamp for each of my HMI lights available. On a low cost 12K HMI extra lamps are anywhere from $800 to $2800 depending on the light.

Thanks, David. At that weight, it's really about on par with an Arri, though around 50-60lbs heavier than a new Power Gems ballast. Since I don't do a lot of slowmo, for low budget needs, there doesn't seem to be a huge reason to not purchase a magnetic Cinemills 12/18k (the most common I see). I do agree that the lamps are the big reason I haven't gone in for it yet, I'd have to know for a fact that I'd get my money back on the investment.
