Just got a Altman fresnel light but its the US 110v version and I'm in Ireland / 240v land. I know there are a lot of cheap 110 to 240v transformers but I would like to get one that wont blow my lightbulb or make the light dimmer...

Anybody have suggestions for transformers? (it needs to support 750w light bulb). I know there is the option of rewiring but would rather to use that as the last resort as I my electrician skills are non-existent :)

No need for a transformer for an incandescent fixture. AFAIK, change the plug, lamp with a 240V globe and you are good to go. The socket and wiring will handle twice the voltage and half the current just fine. For confirmation, though, go to the lighting forum on cinematography.com where lots of pro Brit and Aussie sparks hang out. Come back and let us know what you hear.

Although the electric plug may be for a US receptacle, it may be able to handle 110-240 in which case you'd only need an adapter; you may wish to verify this. If that is not the case, I'd only go by what the company and/or a local licensed electrician recommends.

Yes this is the case. I have traveled back and forth between the USA and Europe for many years for productions. I have 120V bulbs and 240V bulbs for the same fixtures, and you can use adapters to go from 3 prong 120V US to 2 prong 240V plugs.. or you can buy 240V cords with the plugs already on. That is what I did. I use Photoflex light kits and they sold me everything I needed to use the kits either in the USA or Europe.
