at least it was better than that stupid japanese movie. I was so pissed.

At least they didn't call it Chinese!

:cheesy:

On a more serious note, Body Snatchers never was and never will be on the same level as Rashômon. It's one of the films that made me want to make movies, because it's perfect.

lol

Zhang Yimou's Hero uses the same principle as Rashômon though, in a way.

Is that the newest Criterion release?
Isn't there just one from Criterion?

I'm thinking of getting the 3 disc as well, as my Dutch version is just one disc. It has great picture quality though. How's the picture quality/transfer on the Criterion version ?

I don't see how you can fault someone for hating Rashomon. For the average filmgoer who isn't steeped in film lore, I can see how that movie would be painfully bad. It did the story from different perspectives thing before anyone, which is the main reason it is considered so memorable. But since that time people have seen dozens of those stories, and therefore the main allure of Rashomon is gone. After that, people have to make the suspension of belief leap of watching a black and white film (which to today's filmgoer feels ancient), old editing techniques, old photographic techniques, old pacing techniques. You need to fully prepare someone before watching that film and explain why all of that stuff was so amazing. I don't think it's any different than someone during that period watching Goodfellas or Pulp Fiction. They would think those films were TERRIBLE. Everything would seem like it was going too fast. The color would be too much. The violence would be shocking. It's different times where people are used to different things. Just because it's considered a "classic" doesn't mean you're an idiot if you don't like it. It's still a film and open to criticism. And since everything that was so revolutionary about it is basically commonplace now times a thousand, I would venture that 90 out of 100 people who watch that film for the first time today would not like it.

Oh yeah, and 11:14 sucked.

I saw Rashomon for the first time before I knew anything about filmmaking or the history of cinema ... and I loved it.

yeah but now they'll dismiss any of his other work. the average person will be like that i know lots of people if the film didnt satisfy them thats it there no redeeming qualities at alll. thats sad to me.

so a generation will lose kurosawa becuas ethey didnt get it... personally if the teacher showed seven samurai first or ikiru first i think there would have been more pople amazed by it... then again these people dindt like citizen kane..... Punches normal people in the face around the world....

remeber these are the people who say vhs was good and widescreen just adds bars..... GD i hate people.

and yes i brought up the fact Hero uses the same type of story telling but uses color and other methods.

I think that few people can deny that Kurosawa is a genius, and I can't think of that many other directors who have produced that many masterpieces (for me personally maybe Bergman, Ozu or Mizoguchi).
