10bit and 4:2:2

I was talking to a broadcast engineer yesterday who was going on about the limitations of 8bit compression, only problem is he speaks in mathmatical code.

I have noticed its effects on DV quite a bit, but have never worked with 10 bit in oreder to compare it.

People are always praising higher colour resolutions, say 4:2:2 over 4:2:0, but should we now be pushing for 10 bit recording in the new generation of cameras. How much of an improvement is it? Is it as important in colour resolution for example?

There's really only one 10-bit format in general use, that I can think of. That's Digital Betacam. I think all other digital formats (including HDCAM, DVCPRO-HD, DVCPRO50, DV, HDV, etc) are all 8-bit...

But is it something we should be asking for in the next generation of cameras? Codecs are obviously going to improve in quality and this seems like a likely area to improve upon, especially from what this engineer was saying. Then again, he is very, very anal about his work.

No doubt 10-bit is superior to 8-bit. No doubt at all. And yes, codecs are getting amazingly good. I'd love to see 10-bit codecs in the future. And as technology increases (such as P2 and straight-to-disk) we can expect to see higher bitrates become more approachable too. Already JVC and Sony are using (or announcing that they're going to be using) disk technology to make better-than-HDV MPEG-2 HD recording systems.

You don't use "sod??"

A sod (noun) is a git, annoying person, ie. you old sod! not very rude, more casual to a mate.

Saying sod as a verb, ie "oh sod it" is like "oh bugger it" - hang on is "bugger it" very British to? Bugger doesn't always mean anal intrusion BTW

In the context above it means, "Forget the HVX" in a casual slang way.

You Americans should really learn how to speak English!

Come to England... we have such good words! :)

Maybe that could be a new tourism promotional logo.

We have good words here too, "fo shizzle ma nizzle". Don't know what it means but we got the words, and if Snoop dog says it, it has to be cool :)

10 bit is a professional method of processing and I doubt you will see it or need to see it in the prosumer world. Currently digibeta, HR and D5 record 10 bit or greater.
