1080p to DVD motion issue advice?

Hi

Ive had good results shooting in 720 60p and going to DVD.
The last wedding I shot in 1080 30p and edited it on a 720 30p timeline in premiere cs5 bevause I wanted to be able to crop zoom 2 of the far wide scenic un-manned cameras.

Well the authored 480i DVD looks good except for during motion like someone walking or a pan, there are some digital looking horizontal lines through the moving images that go away as soon as the motion stops.

It was a short wedding so the disc had lots of left over space.
The workflow was edit in avchd 720 30p timeline. Export to DV avi 480i matrox dv/dvcam then bring the Avis into encore cs5 and author.
The workflow was normal for me except for the 1080 in 720 timeline step.

Any ideas what I need to do for better results?

Oops. I forgot to mention that my test monitor is a 32 inch old fashioned CRT TV connected s video to a set top DVD player.
The avi file looks good playing on the computer monitor.

Why do you export to DV? Just bring the Premiere project into Encore. You're adding a compression cycle that you don't need to.

If you export to anything, export to DVD-compliant MPEG-2. At least that should be put to DVD without any further conversion. As it is, you're going from HD to 480 DV to 480 MPEG-2 on DVD. The unnecessary DV step is costing you, because of instead of creating the DVD MPEG-2 files from the original HD, it's creating them from highly-compressed DV.

What's probably happening is that with all the compressing/re-compressing, the conversion from 30p to the 480/60i for DVD is producing interlace artifacts. Try just using the Premiere project in Encore and see if it takes care of the problem.

Ok thank you. I'll try that.
The reason for the conversion to DV first before mpeg 2 was that I read that the results are very poor going directly from HD to mpeg-2 SD and that the extra step was needed.
I didn't realize encore could import premiere projects. My workflow still has lingering traits leftover from my old matrox and premiere 2.0 (CS/CS/2) workflow.

Thank you again

The old conversion advice was because of the HD to SD downsampling process...it's still an issue with some compressors, where the downsample introduced aliasing or other artifacts. YMMV depending on your other tools and formats.
The issue you're seeing is because of the interlacing being introduced in the DV conversion step and then getting swapped on the MPEG2. Interlacing is pure evil.

The field order shouldn't be swapped between DV and MPEG-2 -- both should be lower field first. If the HD is 30p and being edited in a 30p sequence, there should be no field order until it's exported to 480i.

You're right, and that it should be the same, but somewhere in the process it looks like it's not based on the reported issues that are showing up on playback. These are the problems that I've always hated with interlaced footage and playback.

What I'm saying is that swapped field order is most likely NOT the problem, because there wouldn't be any reason why it would be swapped.
