1080p and backpacking

Hi All,

I'm looking for advice on a camcorder (or HDSLR perhaps) to document a upcoming backpacking trip. I want a small and light (if possible) unit capable of 1080p and sound. I don't care as much about the video and audio quality as much as I care about the portability though if I can have both this would be ideal. I was looking at the panasonic.TM700 as one possibility. Are there others? Is the GoPro a valid option?

thanks,

Greg

thanks for the reply. I need to take something lighter, though this looks appealing. I'm taking food for 7 days and weight is an issue. I was also hoping to spend under $1000.

Sorry, I didn't realize you meant REAL BACKPACKING. I do believe the TM900 has the same chipset and it is close to a grand. As with any pocket cam, you will lose buttons and have to set things from menus.

Another thought: For a knock around cam, I have a Pana TS2 which is a rugged pocket cam and can do underwater too. The photo capability of the cam is only so-so, but I have been surprised by its video ability. Only 720/30p (AVCHD) though. No real audio either, but for what it is, pretty surprising and runs forever on a battery charge.

thank you all, Mark and Grant! There is actually a Pana TS3! I think it does full HD (1080p) and mono audio.

I've narrowed it down to these three: the Panasonic TS3, Sony HX9V and the Panasonic TM900. One of the primary considerations is battery life. Trying to compare and sort through everything now. I very much appreciate your recommendations. I would never have know about the TS3 otherwise. And it would be a no brainer if not for the short zoom and reviews saying the battery life is not that great...

I'm really curious how the tm900 and tm90 compare image quality-wise? Looks like the main difference is 1 MOS instead of 3...

How about a gh2 with a pancake lens. Get a monopod, use it as a walking stick and then get a belt so you can stabilize things when you record. Get a solar powered charger since the battery isn't the best. You can do 4K timelapses of the milkyway.

haha. like this idea! I really want an excuse to get a GH2 but unfortunately (or fortunately) I already have a T2i. I'm sure the GH2 is smaller etc... nice dream and good idea too. Just out of curiosity, where can I get a good solar powered battery charger?
