1080i60 Slow motion Help Please.

Thank you in advance! Please help me figure out how to low down a part of my clip! :2vrolijk_08:

I have searched the threads and Googled the net for assistance for help on how to reduce the speed of my clips. Unfortunately, this my third night without success.

I recorded with my FX1 and imported my video into FCP 6 @ HDV 1080i60 with shutter speed >120.

I have several clips I need to have a portion within them slowed down.

The scenario:

A clip of a motorcycle turning a 45 degree corner at 30 mph.

Within my sequence (HDV 1080i60) I have my clip. I used the blade tool and created a very short snippet (about 25 frames) where I want a slow motion effect to occur.

Overall the entire scene will be a few minutes. But the slow motion clips (before slow motion) are only about 10 seconds total between 20 clips (if broken down to mph category = 5 sequences of 4 clips within).

I will need to decrease the speed quite a bit for the 30mph. For my other clips that are under 30 mph they will progressively not need to be as slow.

I have available tools:

Compressor
Cinema Tools
Motion
After Effects
Plugin Twixtor loaded for FCP 6

I have attempted Twixtor but still having a hard time understanding the concept of creating sequence within sequence in order to create the frames beyond the original clip.

I have used exporting that snippet within it's own sequence to a quicktime movie with original settings to Compressor and attempt the frame blending at best @ 400% speed. It rendered very nice with quicktime settings (at 5mph speeds) but once imported back into FCP it looks horrible.

I have attempted to batch exports my clips each speed into their own sequences to a 1080 60i format and bring them into compressor and batch export them out as a HDV 720p60 and bring it into Cinema Tools to Conform it to a 23.98 frame rate but could not conform because it had a "temporal compression" already

Tried to export clips using a DVCPRO 60p compression and conform then bring into FCP then add another ontop layer change the de-interlance to odd and even add blink to top but then footage is all jerky back and forth.

Ideally, Love to learn twixtor based on the great reviews but also - I'm getting burnt out - would like to be able to slow my portion of the clip and use it with the remainder of my scene and be able to render this to a nice quality DVD.

Thanks Guys - I do apologize for a frequent question but I not having any luck with all that I have tried above.

Thanks,

Jason

Twixtor is the best, here's what you do. To extend the clip you want beyond what's there, duplicate it five or six times in a row in the timeline, select them all and go to sequence>nest item(s). Name it and hit okay. It will join them together in the timeline. Then apply the Twixtor plug in. In the filters tab, you'll see Color Source and a box next to it labeled Self. Drag the clip you want to slow down from your bin into this box(make sure you've already set an in point on the clip in the bin, otherwise it will start it from the beginning). On input fields select Upper, on speed% choose 50 or whatever speed you want but I wouldn't go under 50, you can also key frame this variable to ramp up or down. That's it!

there is a way to get perfect 40% speed slow mo out of your 60i footage if you can afford to lose some resolution. this method involves no plugins and is like glass smooth.

get a free program called JES deinterlacer. it's on the web. take your clip into this program and deinterlace using both fields. this will automatically turn each field into a full frame and double the length of the clip. next take the new clip into cinema tools and conform it to whatever frame rate you are working in. next, drop the clip on your timeline and press play. it will be in perfect slow motion with no plugs required.

if you are at 29.97 then it plays at 50% - 23.98 will play at 40%

you will lose some vertical resolution because you are taking 1 field (half the scanlines) and turning it into a full frame. however, if your final output is SD, or web, you won't see this loss as you are still above these resolutions. Even 720p won't look bad.

If you can't afford the loss in resolution, then twixtor is the way to go. it has it's faults though. like when one object passes over another, they tend to blend and smear into each other. beyond that, it does a great job.

Thanks Guys for the Replies! - I'm going to go try them out now and see what will work for my needs!

Ah, it's super great to have resources like this!

I'm trying to work this work out. A quick question.

I have a imported clip of an entire pan from 0 to 180degrees. At the 90degree mark, I want to slow down about 10 frames of footage from that clip.

I have used the blade tool to create a segment, however, how do I make that segment an independent clip in order to drag into the "Self" box?

Also, is there a way to take all my segments I've created from my different angle pans at 5mph then 10mph etc and apply the effect to them entirely? Then re-segment them (with blade tool?) and drag them to the appropriate locations on the timeline?

Thank you!

Not sure exactly what you're trying, but any segment you make in the timeline can be dragged into the project bin, which will create a clip with that in and out point. Just rename it so you can differentiate between them. Basically Twixtor looks at the set in point on a clip when it is dragged into the Self box and stars the effect from there. If there is no set in point it starts from the head of the clip. If you want a shot to go from regular speed to slow motion, I'd apply the effect to the whole clip, starting at 100 percent, and then at the slow down point add two keyframes about 10 frames apart, ramping down to 50. This will give you a more gradual and realistic speed ramping effect.
