100mm vs. 75mm bowls?

Hi guys,

I'm wondering what your thoughts are as to the practical differences between 75mm and 100mm tripods/heads?

I'm fairly set on the idea of a 2-10kg payload range tripod to accommodate various riggings of large-sensor cameras (DSLRs, FS100s, F3s, various rigs etc) but can't quite decide whether to go the 75mm or 100mm route. A used Cartoni Focus with new Miller Solo 100mm legs will set me back roughly the same price as a new Miller Compass 12/Solo Legs 75mm setup (and both offer the same payload range), so which would be the smarter investment?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

I was having the same dilemma, I ended up going with a Sachtler FSB8 (75mm ball) no complaints here. If you're worried about trying to use a 75mm head on jibs, etc you can always get a 75 to 100mm adapter. If I were you I'd go with the miller over the Cartoni from what I've read and I did a lot of reading.
If you're looking for a tripod I found the best value (being in Qld) to be http://www.fullcompass.com/product/390012.html even with cutoms tax and GST it still ends up to be cheaper than a Miller Compass 15 from BHPhoto.

Hi guys,

Well, the practical difference is... 25mm (sorry).

I personally use a Gitzo 3541XLS with 75mm bowl adapter and a Vinten 5AS, and love it, love it, love it. The sticks hold 40lbs and the head 23lbs.

Nothing beats Carbon Fiber legs IMO, for weight/strength. If it is only between those two, then I'd get the Used Cartoni & New Miller Solo 100mm legs for myself.

But if you're open to more suggestions, have you looked at the Gitzo GT3531LSV? On sale at B&H for $700 WITH a 75mm bowl. Then get the Miller Compass 15 head for $1300.
