I have a ton of tapes I shot on my DVX 100b several years ago and I now need to edit them. Since I took those years off this project, I've jumped from my old computer with FCP3 up to FCPX. And something is wrong with how I'm ingesting this footage.
It seems that no matter how I capture the footage, it always has a fierce audio drift where the audio/video synch doesn't last more than about 10 minutes. After replacing cables, trying different tapes (all shot at 24p), and replacing cables, I took the deck, cables, and HDD to a friend who was able to capture using Premiere with no audio drift (i.e. the hardware all works). The footage that I brought in from Premiere, however, has an odd color to it and very visible interlacing. I also downloaded a copy of Avid and it looks similar to the Premiere footage: while the audio drift is gone, there is highly visible interlacing and the quality seems degraded....
But there has to be a way to do this in FCPX! I don't understand what I'm doing wrong, but it seems like the pulldown is messing things up. I understand that the camera is recording 24p in a 60i wrapper at 29.97, and that there may be an issue between the Panasonic pulldown (2:3:2:3) and the FCPX pulldown (2:2:2:4), but I can't for the life of me figure out how to see or change the pulldown. I haven't installed Compressor, but do some people seem to be using that for a step in here?
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong or what a better workflow is for this? It's driving me crazy....
Thank you!
Peter
