Hi

Im redoing my studio 5X7m (it will be tungsten for now.. no daylight in there at all)

I was thinking of starting with a wash of 4 1k china balls on the roof. (actually hanging from studio grid.. baby pins)

Im not sure what is a cheap simple fixture

I have a 'Starlight QL' which seems OK but I cant find them for sale and dont know how one would affix a china ball.

Here is what I did. You could modify my implementation by just using an open umbrella rather than one with a closed top. It's not a china ball, but the effect should be similar if the umbrella top is pointed down. The Starlites are available on ebay for very reasonable prices. I've bought 3 of them on ebay.

Remember that you are designing your own light fixture. So safety is of utmost concern. There was a good deal of concern by others that my light may have heat issues considering it had 1000w in a closed container of fabric. It does not and it conforms to the UL/CSA requirements (listed in the thread).

Interesting.. especially ref the 'wrong' orientation and safety.

I need insurable safety.. and best globe/bulb life.

So thank you.. for demonstrating that I might be 'barking up the wrong tree' with a Starlight in my imagined configuration.

As soon as you modify any UL Listed fixture, you are no longer insurably safe. Modifying a china ball to accept a 1000w lamp is not insurable. So you need to stick with products like Chimera or a space light.

Chimera products are individually rated. The light fixture, which is similar to the Starlite QL is rated at 1000W, while the pancake lantern is rated at 2000W.

There is also the possibility of using a large silk, we have a white ceiling so the lights could bounce up... maybe I should edit the post..

'Ways to wash my studio white with four roof fixtures..'

here you can see the redheads are a chaos and difficult to get at for location work.. (mainly due to getting the cabling sorted.. which it is not in this photo!) Im trying to clean it up and make it slicker..

With the white walls and ceilings, there are any number of ways to do it inexpensively. The QLs with small umbrellas would work (and be UL/CSA ok. Check with photoflex to be sure).

Good thought. thanks... I dont really need actual modifiers up there. I guess I just though 4 china balls would just look tidy, (and be reasonably functional for 'wash') Im not sure if Chimera dollar is actually worth that..

When working the key and hair lights are usually on stands on the ground as they are much eisier to move with precision..
