$1000 to spend...

Just got a $1000 check from my parents for my b-day. I told them i needed it to upgrade my computer (a super old 1.4ghz AMD). But now, i was thinking, that's a lot of money for a student. Should I save it? Invest in something? Get some nifty gadgets for the DVX?
My Editing has been harshly hindered by my slow machine and rendering takes forever, but i guess it's not the WORST machine... What would you guys do?

Re: $1000 to spend...

I can PM you my address so you can send some of that money down here!

1.4ghz AMD is pretty slow... I don't know how you have the patients to edit on that...

Re: $1000 to spend...

I'd say invest the money in an upgrade of your computer.
Editing just sucks when you have to wait all the time.
1.000 bucks will buy a nice new motherboard, processor,
some RAM and maybe even a new bigger harddisk.

Re: $1000 to spend...

Wow--nice parents. How about spending half of it to upgrade your computer and banking the other half--at least until you really need something badly.

Re: $1000 to spend...

As a former student, I recommend you blow it on alcohol and drugs. Do you have any idea how far $1000 will go in Tijuana?

Re: $1000 to spend...

your absolutely right. i've been trying to get a heroin addiction going.

I think i'll just get a new computer with a bunch of storage. I really cant get anything decent for under 1k while building from ground up using non-generic parts. Speaking of which, i was debating whether or not to get one of those new 10K WD drives plus a 200gb seagate, or just get two 200gb seagates. here's my system thus far:

Lian Li Case- Have
550Watt Antec PSU- Have
ATI RADEON 9800 PRO   $265.00
Pentium 4/ 3.4C            $417.00
Abit IC7 MAX3 Mobo-     $180
SONY Floppy Disk Drive   $11.99
2X Seagate 200GB          $282.00
Hitachi HDD 250gb Have

I'm a little over ATM, but plan on buying in a month or so when prices come down a little bit

Re: $1000 to spend...

go to pechanga in temecula and bet on black...hey, now you've got $2000 to spend! i say if your computer is holding ya back, then upgrade the thing...

Re: $1000 to spend...

Get something that would help you make your next 1000 yourself, and happy b'day!

Re: $1000 to spend...

Just though I'd share a recent experience, seems to fit the theme.
I recently shot a wedding for a friend (for free :'(). but it turned out pretty good in the end. For the bachelor party we went to a local casino, my first one ever (can you believe it?). To make a long story short I ended up getting a $5 ticket. On my first machine I pulled twice and won $60. Cool I then changed machines and on my third pull on that one I won $300. So now I earned $300 in 7 min from just $5. Of coarse I was a wus and pocketed the money, but here is my point. with $5 I ended up winning $350 (I spent anothe ten after I won). If I had a thousand dollars to spend that would have been.... . . . . . .$70,000 Oh my word! Heck I think you know what I'm saying. Gamble Gamble Gamble ;D

Side note, since that day I have returned to that casino everyday, but I havn't won yet. I figure I'm about $18000 in the hole, but I know the payoff is coming soon ;D I just need to rob some banks to pay off a couple of loan sharks that I met at the blackjack table. After that, life will be good. and I know the slot machines are getting ready to pay big time. They are just toying with me. BTW, don't tell my wife, I want this all to be a big surprise. :D :D :D :D :D :D :'(

Yeah, if you think 1k is a lot of money to waste, don't waste it. Invest it in yourself. When I bought my computer, I spent close to 3000 dollars (3x more in local currency) that I earned in a year working as an intern, saving my allowance (oh, I miss that!), birthday gifts, etc (that was a very good year...). One year doing editing gigs and I got enough money to buy my DVX. So that first investment made me make some more money, learn more and got me a camera. I am being really lucky, and I am not counting on things to go this well forever. But from what I did with my computer, from what I've learned, and from the money I made, the investment realy paid for itself. I think buying the computer (It was a PowerMac G4) was the best carrer decision I ever took. While it might apply differently for you, I guess it's a valid point of view.

Re: $1000 to spend...

Thanks for the input guys. im just gonna go with the computer. Half the programs i run are just too dang slow for any kind of real-time editing, even in "draft" modes. Now with prices falling because of Intels new "biggest and baddest" chipset, i think i'll jump on the bandwagon.
