You can also take a look at the Cartoni Focus, it was the one I got finally after testing the DV6 and realizing that a 75mm bowl and 1200€ for the head only wasn't such a good idea, also the Focus is 1-10kg whereas the DV6 is 1-9, still a great head though.
I am making the same decision now between the bogen and sachlers.
Thing is the bogen 503 has adjustable tension - the sachler D4 has only on and off. So If i get a sachler it would have to be the DV6 for adjustable tension - but that costs 1700 - so I likely will have to bogen - but still agonizing over it
I have the Bogen 503 tripod and I love it. I'm not saying there aren't better tripods out there for more money but for the price ( around 550 ) it can't be beat in my book
Check out the print or online version of studiomonthly.com, they have an article about various tripods at various price points. The Cartoni Focus got great marks, and it's around $1300 or so.
Cartoni Focus if you want a lightweight performer...
It has surprised me how well it handles even heavier cameras (DSR390etc).
Quite an improvement over the Cartoni Alfa it replaces!
FWIW my 2cents
I have the cartoni focus and love it. Works better then an tripod I have ever run outside of the 5,000 dollar and up range. But it works and feels like a 5,000 dollar tripod.
I bought the Miller DS20 about 5 years ago. It still works great and I have been pretty hard on it. I would spend as much as you can on a tripod. It's well worth it if you want to do solid pans and tilts. Also, it's holding your precious camera. Get a good one!
