Mike Krumlauf
Award Winning Filmmaker
I was meaning to post this yesterday but got a bit tied up at work and was beat when I got home.
Ten years ago yesterday, John Hughes passed in NYC from a heart attack. I know hes probably not considered by most here as anything great like some other filmmakers we speak of but he really meant a lot to me. Growing up in the chicago suburbs, his love of doing everything in Chicago and supporting local businesses, etc, he was and still is the most influential filmmaker in my life. Having a hollywood director to look up to who was local and as passionate for your city as you were went a long way for me. I know there have been other Chicago filmmakers like John Landis, Michael Mann, etc, but John was the only one who shot every single film he directed in the chicago area and also lived in the area the majority of his life (minus the few years in the 80s he lived in the Brentwood area of LA, which he was on record of hating every minute of). When TMZ broke the news ten years ago I was so upset and since his death, I have taken the time to visit his grave in Lake Forest, Illinois multiple times and even read him a personal letter one of the visits on just what his legacy means to me. I think it's important for filmmakers such as myself to have someone like John to look up to. Im sure most of you have that one filmmaker that stands out to you among the rest and for me it always has been and always will be John. I had the pleasure of being the videographer for the 30th birthday celebration of Ferris Bueller in Chicago and was able to rub elbows with the likes of Edie McClurg, Cindy Picket, and other supporting cast members and also had a 20min heart to heart with John's wife which is something I will never forget.
If any of you share the same feelings towards John and his work or if any of you got to work on any of his pictures i'd love to hear your stories.
