Short Version:

Camera fell off monopod. A Ring holding the lens hood assembly broke off. Here are some pics of it.

Also, I noticed this odd flare ring after the camera broke. Anyone know what it is? The flare is over my face on this screen grab.

The Long Version ...

Hey Everyone,

After filming the Scientist with a broken DVX (fixed with black tape) I finally got around to taking some pictures of the broken part. Here again is the story to refresh your memories ...

In Edmonton I was filming a dance convention, 10 days after I had recieved my camera from B&H. Since I am a student and I am as poor as poo I was borrowing any sort of camera support I could get my hands on. It happened to be a manfrotto monopod. It has these three legs that could stick out at the bottom to make the monopod stand up. I had the camera resting on the steady monopod that weekend and the weekend before for the interviews I was doing, It's quite stable. Anyways, I was filming this question and answer period with the camera on the monopod, it ended, I turned around to pick up my bag and I hear this young kid shout "HeyManYourCamerasGonnaFall!!" I swing back around just in time to see the camera smack front first into the ground and the lens hood go flying.

Basically the lens hood attaches to a ring, and the ring that broke attaches the lens-hood-ring to the camera. The ring that broke goes right around the lens. The focus ring sits ontop of the ring that broke.

I called RBE electronics (panasonic told me to go there) and they quoted me $90 for the part. They sent me a schematic of the DVX and I circled the ring I thought it was and sent it back. (the schematic was unclear) So I might have told them the wrong ring. Anyways, I'm going to email them the pics, but I wanted to see what you guys thought about the broken part, what you think I need, or should do. I am also worried about any internal damage. There is also this strange lens flare that appears, I only noticed it after the camera was broken, and I am unfamiliar with filming so I don't know if it was there before. It seems it shouldn't be. There is a screen grab of that pic as well.

That was a lot to read, but any light that could be shed on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

ouch.

that flare is normal.. because you are shooting into the sun.

Re: 10 Day Old 100A Broken! With Pics!

Jarred,

That flare is normal? I forgot to mention that it goes all the way around the screen? In a circle. I thought the hexagon shaped flares were normal, but this is like a static ring that goes right around in my shot that doesn't move. It's ugly, and I've never seen footage with something like that in it. I should find a better example of it.
But that screen grab was the only thing I had at the moment.

Re: 10 Day Old 100A Broken! With Pics!

That picture is funny with you upset about DVX :D

And yes, like Jarred says, its all normal with the lens flare.

Re: 10 Day Old 100A Broken! With Pics!

The ugly ring flare is normal eh? Is there a certain technique to avoid that? It only happens sometimes. The other little hexagon lens flares are cool most of the time. But that one is just atrocious. I know when I was doing an interview there was an intense flare like that. Maybe I'll get a screen grab of that to show. Not that I don't believe you guys, I just want to be sure. a) I'm paranoid something is misaligned in my camera, and B) that flare is so ugly and sinful.

BTW that pic is really how I feel. I've wanted a 3CCD camera since '97 when I first found out about that sony. Finally in 2004 7 years later, I save enough to buy one. and in 1/255 of the time I wanted one, it breaks.

Re: 10 Day Old 100A Broken! With Pics!

The flare is normal under certain conditions. Whenever you shoot towards a bright light for example (Like the Sun!). If it's doing it all the time no matter what the conditions, then...

Re: 10 Day Old 100A Broken! With Pics!

In this GRab, it appears to be an extension of the flare. Looks normal to me!

Re: 10 Day Old 100A Broken! With Pics!

John,

with my camera disassembled, I figured out what it is. It's a reflection off of my UV filter. Now here's my next question...
...does that happen with all UV filters? I'm trying to set up a shot in my room where you can really see that ring, and then take the UV filter away and watch it move..but that's what it is.

Re: 10 Day Old 100A Broken! With Pics!

it is the natural way light and lenses work.. unless you use a flare resistant lens like the cookes..

A UV filter simulates the flare but even more so because it is less protected from stray light. A multicoated filter reduces that light reflection considerably.

Re: 10 Day Old 100A Broken! With Pics!

Jarred,

Thanks for the info. So did I basically get just an el-cheapo UV filter (wait, I did I know I did $24 USD), and that's the result? I basically bought a filter just to protect the lense, but if that garbage is going to show up ...then hmmff humbug!

a better multicoated UV filter will protect against the ugly flares then?

Re: 10 Day Old 100A Broken! With Pics!

HOLY OUTRAGEOUS!!!

I just got a quote back from RBE Video, the place that panasonic told me to go to get my camera fixed. I emailed them the pictures and they quoted me $250 + Tax for parts and labour. :-[

Does anyone know what part number is of the part I need? I would rather order it directly from panasonic for cheaper and then install it myself. On a schematic of the Frame and Casing parts assembly it's part number #68. Which totally doesn't look like the part, but RBE is telling me that is it.

Any help?!? I don't have $10 for tapes! So $250 to fix my camera is a little much for me. :(

Thanks!

Re: 10 Day Old 100A Broken! With Pics!

To be honest, $250 to fix a $3000+ camcorder that took a dive off a monopod ain't to bad.  You could easily have cracked the lens or any number of things.  Hey maybe you can coax some members from the forum to chip in a buck or two each.  If you had a paypal account we could all chip in a buck and help you out a little.  I only say this because
1. I know the feeling of wanting to be creative with my artwork and being limited only by my cashflow, (I'm currenlty a fulltime student and married, trying to pay off my loans with my brand new $3000 investment).
2. I saw some of your work, and it is quite good.  I say this because I can see this to also be a potential problem as future people will look at this and say, "hey, that animorphic adapter looks cool, maybe I can't get those shmucks on dvxuser.com to pay for."  If anybody else wants to chime in help out, I'd be glad to donate the first buck or two. :)
3. You have actual photographic evidence of a very unfortunate situation. Then again, I saw your photoshop work and this could all easily be a hoax ;)

Re: 10 Day Old 100A Broken! With Pics!

scharky,

I know $250 to fix a $5000 (CAN) camera is REALTIVELY inexpensive, what I find that IS expensive is this shop charging me $250 to screw in plastic ring. I know it could have been worse, a LOT worse, and I'm thankful it isn't.

I appreciate your ideas, and your offer to donate some money. I do appreciate it. If paying the $250 was my only way to get the camera fixed, and I was poorer than I am, I would go for it. Right now my jobs pay me well, and within a week or two I'd have enough money, i'm just looking for a way not to spend $250 for a plastic ring, 4 screws and 15 mins of labour to attach it. I'm more into buying the ring for $10-$20-$30-$50 and putting it in myself. I'd do it, except I don't know what part to order! That's where I really could use some help! So if anyone knows, or knows where I could order it from, or knows how I could find out, I would appreciate that.

Thanks scharky for the ideas and compassion. Poor Starving artists ... it's a struggle!

Re: 10 Day Old 100A Broken! With Pics!

I know what your talking about, brand name replacement products are way too expensive. I work for a photography company (doing the photo retouches and graphic design work) and we have a noritsu 2800 mini photo lab. One time a small magnet, that holds the door closed were you reload the paper, broke. No problem i thought, it's just a magnet right. Well, it turns out that the replacement magnet was about $50. This is a magnet by the way that is no bigger than a quarter. However it is shaped just right, that using a generic magnet would not work. The moral of the story, Cheap parts=big bucks to the manufacturers. If the ring on the dvx really did cost $200 the whole camera would be about $200,000.
