1 man, 1 camera, no mixer...

Looking for versatile run n' gun HVX audio set-up, no mixer. Primarily for location work. 1 channel LAV, the other channel shotgun.

1.) A wireless LAV. I have used the Audio Technica ATW series direct to camera before, while they do alright inside a studio (I still hate them)... I all but abandon them outdoors. I've been looking at the Sennheiser G2s, but have never used them personally. Any other suggestions?

2.) Need a shotgun versatile enough to be effective mounted onto the camera, but also able to function well in locked down (boom or c-stand) interviews...
Would the Sennheiser ME66 do the job? Once again, any other suggestions?

Thank you for your time.

1. i've read a lot of good things about the sennheiser G2 on this board, i've not personnally used one, but other's rave about them.

2. the general consensus is that the ME66 is OK but not great. Most who buy them, want to upgrade after about 12 months. The one to seriously look at is the sennheiser 416 ( that is all i've used in 20 years running and gunning )

oleg2 is the man on this board when it come's to mics!!

The Senn G2's are great for low budget wireless much better than the ATW's. I have Lectros and 2 Senn's for wireless hops to camera from a sound kit. A plus for the price is they are tuneable, two years ago I was shooting at the NBA finals and couldn't get an answer on freqs so I just went to work soon the A2 found me and spanked me for being on his freqs then he pulled out the master sheet and we found and open spot and I just dialed the Senns in and kept right on shooting. Many times if you go to a one man band they work fine. I also recommend the BEC DVCAM Bracket this helps with attaching wireless on the 100b or any of the small DV cams.

Ian is right on with the 416 it has been indy standard for years and I've taken mine all over the world and it keeps going and going... If you are on a budget you can buy the RODE and save your money for the 416.
Good luck
A.G.

if the audio technica wireless pissed you off (and didnt mention your reason), the G2 is probably also going to piss you off. Its much better in some ways (interface, features), but the sound quality is not exactly a world of difference.

my 2c.

Alright, what would be the next step 'up' in wireless mics be from the G2? I'd rather spend more on a mic that I'd like to keep around, rather than just replace or rent for larger gigs.

yes the G2's are cheap and are tolerable like the old saying 'you get what you pay for. To solve your problem you need to get either Lectro 411's or Zaxcom if you really want quality. I've got the Lectro 411 (in my mixer bag) and they by far are the best wireless I've used. The G2's are disposable and for the price they are $500 wireless. I use them for wireless hops on broadcast tv ie; NBA, Current Affair, many HGTV shows and they are adequate. You can't expect to pay that much and get the performance of the Lectro 411 or the Zaxcom. I also use Lectro 190's as wireless hops to the camera when freqs are not an issue with much success. It's all about buying what you can afford at the time pay it off with work and upgrade. My next buy is the stereo Zaxcom one box two channels everyone I've talked to say it's the bomb. But until I can pay $4000.00 for wireless hops to my camera I'll keep using the G2's and Lecto 190's

Look, the Lectro 411's are awesome but they are so NOT the next step up from G2 guys.

The Sonys are ok too, but price/performance ratio is a bit whack for me. I just dislike Sony to be honest - but to every man his own :)

Above G2 you can get any 2xx series lectro, the 190's sound great (but in the states you guys have the frequency issues), and there's even the 100's, but I dont really recommend them. A lot of Lectro 2xx series stuff is going for cheap lately - i got offered two 201's for $1000 the other day. Had they been in my block, I would have grabbed them.

The G2's are "fine" (notice I didn't say good or great) as long as you replace the stock mic that comes with them. I agree 1000% with the person above that said to buy what you can afford now, pay that off with work and then move up the chain again.

And, to the person that said the general consensus on the ME66 is that it is okay, not great is a bit off on that statement. The general consensus on the ME66 is that it is crap for the price. You get better sound with a Rode at 1/3 the price.

I don't do on-camera mount work, so I don't know if this will work for you or not, but a good value mic is the Audio Technica 4073a. But, you can probably get a used 416 for about what you would pay for a new 4073a, so why not go that direction?
