Just in case you were considering going for a Sunday drive after cutting the lawn:

MONTICELLO, FL — One man is dead following a Saturday crash involving a semi and a riding lawn mower near the corner of Jefferson and Chestnut streets.
Henry Webb Jr., 63, was killed when the front end of the 1995 Craftsman lawn mower he was driving across Jefferson Street collided with the left rear tire of the semi trailer being driven by 62-year-old Dellcina Holcomb of Bushnell.

Angela Freeman was driving home on Jefferson when she passed the crash scene.
"I knew it was him because I recognized the lawn mower," Freeman said, while at the scene, noting that she often saw him travelling on the mower. "This is tragic. It's just sad because you just never know when you are going to go."

It was just Friday night when Webb's younger brother Holsey last saw Webb. Holsey Webb also said Henry Webb used the lawn mower as a means of travel.
"I just talked to him yesterday and told him he needed to park it," Holsey Webb said. "But a lot of people ride their lawn mowers. It's not uncommon."

FHP Sgt. Steven Hooppell said it is illegal to operate a lawn mower on a roadway. The crash remained under investigation, Hooppell said.

I don't believe this scene was in David Lynch's "The Straight Story".

I find it tragically humorous that they actually list the type of lawn mower, as if that was significant.......

Like if it were a '96 John Deere Riding Mower, the outcome would have been any different.

He was riding a lawnmower and a semi hit him.

You don't need the law/police to make it illegal to drive a lawn mower on the roadway, you need logic and simple common sense. Unfortunately we shelter the stupid in modern society (aka the government "protects" us from ourselves). If this was 15,000 years ago this guy would have been eaten by a lion years ago.

Typical police report language, yet they didn't even say if the semi was a Mack or Peterbilt?
And Doc, just because I know you are as into lawnmowers as weaponry, Straight Story was about a John Deere 110 Lawn Tractor!

And you shouldn't operate a semi in the yard, either (at least in high grass...)

His brother said it's not uncommon to use a lawn mower for transportation? in my town it is. But then again, this was florida. And we all know Florida is crawling with hillbilly's and rednecks.

You shouldn't post anything unless you know the facts. The semi DIDN'T hit him but he drove the mower in the left rear tire on the trailer. I know the drive of the semi personally and there is video of the accident. What nobody has said in the papers that the poor man that died was drunk at the time..

Your first post and you really don't get what's being said here. Nobody is faulting the driver of the truck. But glad to see you joined just to defend a point we all already get. It doesn't matter who hit who......the outcome would have remained the same. Lawn tractor vs. big rig or big rig vs. lawn tractor, no appreciable difference. If it had been reported that the driver of the truck had driven through a lawn and then hit the mower guy, then maybe he would need some defense. But we all read:
Henry Webb Jr., 63, was killed when the front end of the 1995 Craftsman lawn mower he was driving across Jefferson Street collided with the left rear tire of the semi trailer being driven by 62-year-old Dellcina Holcomb of Bushnell.

Your defending of your friend/acquaintance is admirable, but completely un-necessary. And if you really are knowledgeable of the facts of the case, you should'nt be talking about them, as you could be called in as a witness and you could actually hurt their defense by talking about it. So.........I'd keep quiet about it, if I were you. Ask the truck driver's attorney (chances are he/she now has one) if you should be getting on a public forum and talking about the case, since the driver is such a close friend of yours.

Gotta love friends that do more harm than good. Got a few of those myself.

But welcome to the site anyway.
