1.85:1 preset

I was wondering... I shot 4:3 but I want to make a Widescreen DVD. I stretched the footage using the 16:9 preset but I was wondering... if I use the 1.85:1 preset, will my dvd player be able to recognize that aspect ratio and display it correctly on both 16:9 and 4:3 TVs or would I have to use the 16:9 preset, stretch it according to that, then crop down to 1.85:1?
Thanks,

The way I understand it is the DVD players can only display 4:3 or 16:9, so if you use 1.85:1 aspect ratio, you should render it as 16:9 with some letterboxing.

Another thing i was wondering is that why when i go into the pan/crop window, and i use the presets from there, the black bars it displays on my TV arent actually black. They're sort of a grayish black and it looks ugly haha. Is there any way to make them straight black like most movie DVDs?
So I can just go into the Pan and Crop window, use the 1.85:1 preset, but dont stretch it in the pan and crop window? When i render it, that's when I click that check box to stretch and letterbox?

You know, Paul, that's a DANG good question. I've noticed the same thing ... however on some TV's it's not an issue. Either way, you're right, I don't see those bars being gray on the professional movie DVD's we buy, so I have no idea why they're gray with Vegas'.

Thoughts anyone?

It's because DV's black is IRE 0 black, and the bars created by the DVD player are IRE 7.5, which is a dark gray.

You can put a filter on the footage to bring the blacks in line (IRE 7.5).

However, if you crop to 1.85:1 and render out as Widescreen, you'll still have a narrow black band between the gray bars and the picture.

The solution is to run a black card under all of your footage, cropped to 16:9, not to 1.85:1. Then, go into its properties and pick 16, 16, 16 for its RGB values.

Ok cool I'll try that. I'm still confused about the 1.85:1 preset though. I want the 1.85:1 aspect ratio but I'm wondering what steps are involved to get it right. Do I take each event, click on the pan/crop button and use the 1.85:1 preset and then select "NO" for "maintain aspect ratio" or do I have to select the 16:9 preset and "no" for "maintain aspect ratio" then import the sequence into a new sequence and use the 1.85:1 preset but this time click "Yes" for Maintain aspect ratio so that instead of stretching it twice, it takes the already stretched footage and crops it down to 1.85:1? I've heard, and XCheck said it above as well, that DVD players can only interpret 16:9 and 4:3 so if it's stretched to 1.85:1, I'm assuming it wont be able to display it properly, right? This will save me some DVDs.
Thanks!

You know, after thinking about it for a bit, 16:9 and 1.85:1 are SO close, you can hardly tell the difference. Why even worry about it? Just go 16:9 & save yourself the extra steps/trouble.

Now if you're wanting a 2.35:1 look, that's understandable.

Yeah I know. you're 100% right. It is kinda silly, isn't it? I wont even ask about 2.35:1... it's been done to death. If I ever want that aspect ratio, I'll search the posts. It's crazy isn't it? Soon we'll be watching movies that look like a long piece of dental floss.... =) hehe

Funny, I've thought about doing some kind of mock short about that.

haha "Hey guys I'm shooting at 89.950777777777777777776:1... 'floss vision'. Screw cinemascope..."

Jubal, is there any way to get the dark grey bars to be black (IRE 0) like all movie DVDs?
Thanks,
