1/2 Screen when applying Video FX

I capture from my DVX100b. Video is shot in 24p. It captures fine. When I try to add a Video FX (Brightness & Contrast) etc ... I see the effect only on 1/2 of the screen?
See Example Below:

I've got some shots nearly identical to that one . . .

From this, I'm sure you see one of the major reasons why shooting in letterbox isn't a great idea.

Thank you for your tips and advice. Worked like a charm Greg. A setting in preview I was unaware of.

Thank you for the Link David, I will watch the 24pBasics.
Do you recommend "Squeeze Mode" for projects that will end up on a Big Screen.

Thanks again.

This may be on-topic. Is there way to create a straight line with the bezier mask tool? (instead of eye-balling it?) This way, I think, I could fix some of my squeeze footage by putting an empty event at the top of the timeline and creating two regions of masking for the bars.

make sense?

Hi David,

Just a couple questions: Why do you recommend 4:3, then cropping.
Resolution? ... "Convert your 4:3 project to Widescreen with or without Film Looks"
Is any resolution lost in the conversion process above. Is the plug-in now availabe for Vegas 6?

Thank You

Because shooting in squeeze gives you no advantage. Squeeze takes the image between the black bars and stretches it out to fill the frame, which, resolution-wise, is the same thing as cropping the picture and uprezzing to 16:9 in post.

But if you start with a 4:3 image, you have options for re-framing the shot in post, whereas with squeeze, you're stuck with your original framing. By cropping later, you can even ad a little bit of "camera movement" like a tilt in post if you like.

As for Celluloid, yes, it's available for V6. You don't need it to make the conversion, though.

Hello David,

I enjoyed your 24p Basics. Well Done. I am using Vegas 6. If I order Celluloid, do I choose the link for Vegas 5. Do you have a link to watch a Demo Video of 4:3 footage that was converted to Widescreen?

Thank You

The Vegas 5 version will be fine.

I don't have a link to a 16:9 crop, but there's plenty of that in the DVX clips section from various members. Also, the 24p tutorial is cropped -- not to 16:9, but to 1.66:1. Just imagine it with a little more black on the top and bottom.

Hi David,

I purchased Celluloid and it is a great tool for converting 4:3 and letterbox footage to widescreen. Thank You. After converting the footage, I then render to 16:9 widescreen .mpeg2 and it looks great. Some minor things to learn as far as still photo deminsions to be resized, text placement etc ... I was looking in the rendering properties ... is it possible to render the converted footage to 1.78.1 Widescreen in Vegas?

Once again, nice plug in. Easy to install and use.
