Wow, we have all of 20 total votes for this month's DVXFest. So 20 votes divided by 7,511 total members is a whopping 0.27%. Even if you assumed that 90% of our members are inactive or on vacation, that would *still* be less than 3%. For some reason, we can rack up 100+ posts to respond to some trivial point in the Cafe, but most of you can't be troubled to watch a few (remarkably entertaining) 6 minute films? Even if you watch one film and comment, that would be nice for the filmmakers. I'm really disappointed in the response. An online community only exists because people are willing to put something in as well as take something out. Thanks to those of you that have taken the time to vote and comment on the films submitted this month.

To be honest, I didn't know voting was up yet... I usually check the "new posts" and haven't seen it. What's the topic called? I'll vote :)

I think there would be better participation if the file sizes were listed, and limited to a reasonable, consistant size.

I've noticed it too, Barry_S. Especially your point about the amazing amount of responses to trivial topics, yet important topics go unnoticed. The same could be said about the real world too, but I won't hi-jack this thread.

Ever since Being Disjecta and John/Antomics win, the enthusiasm for the DVXfest has dwindled. Like it was a fad. I can't explain it, but I don't like it. The DVXfest is an incredible opportunity for filmmakers to have their videos seen. Most festivals you apply to and your odds of being accepted are like winning the lottery. With the DVXfest, every video submitted is accepted into the competition and has the opportunity to win some useful prizes.

Personally (and honestly) the script just didn't do anything for me. I need to feel a connection with the script/project in order to dust off the DVX and bother others to help me. I tried explaining the video to my girlfriend but I couldn't do it. Maybe it's my bad thai. ...Others maybe felt the same lack of connection, which might explain the lack of interest in this months fest.

Next month has a zombie theme. I'm sure many will enjoy it, but some (myself included) don't rush out to see zombie flicks. These themes limit your audience. The DVxfests which have an open theme (make what you want) are far more interesting and appeal to a far larger audience. I suggest more of those in the future.

Also, maybe have Jarred take down the John Hudson "10,000" banner for a week (sorry John) and make a DVXfest one instead. I've made this suggestion before. A simple banner during the DVXfest competition could greatly increase the participation. I'll make one if nobody has free-time.

Your post was well deserved Barry_S. There were some really good submissions this month and they deserve to be recognized. They worked hard and you/TC must be proud to have people from all over the world use your script. That's so freakin cool!!!

Let me know if there's anything I can do to help out.

It sounds like a lot of people (or atleast the majority who have posted here) didn't know about it. I did, I have just been pondering who to vote for, and I just did not more than 3 minutes ago.

Thanks everyone for the feedback--I appreciate it. I'll try to better publicize the next DVXFest. Right now, I post a global announcement that automatically appears at the top of *every* forum, plus a sticky in the Cafe--in addition to three sticky posts in the DVXfest forum. John's already suggested a DVXFest banner and I agree, it would be a nice visual way to promote the fest. Plus, there's some other promotional stuff that i've got in mind.

Pookie--We do limit the length of films--and by default that does a pretty good job limiting the size. If any film seems like it's on a slow or iffy server, I'll also post it to the www.dvxfest.com. server. I also request direct links for every submission, so you can just bop down the list and right click/Save As with every film. I find that with any high speed connection, all of the films can be downloaded in a just a few minutes--in the background. I guess I could consider a hard limit on file size.

P.K.--thanks for your comments. I've found that the themes keep the interest high from filmmakers and with 8 entries this month, I'm happy with the participation level. As usual, we'll alternate themes with "open" competitions. I'm not sure it's a matter of folks not being interested in a given theme and passing on the movies--although the themes clearly appeal to different groups of filmmakers. If you ever get some spare time, you might make a DVXFest trailer. :)

Also, shorts are a different kettle of fish than features. I might go see a zombie film once every 10 years, but you have to admit--next month's DVXFest: the Zombie Edition is going to be a lot of fun. I'm consistently amazed at the level of creativity and skill of even beginning filmmakers that hang around here.

I know this point has already been driven home but I too was not aware and I've always really liked participating in the fests (voting wise that is so far). I wouldn't mind an email reminder at all actually if that could be an idea.

I watched all the entries on July 2nd and can't decide between (moderator edit: please discuss films here)

edit: Okay. I'll do that from now on. I haven't read that thread yet, by the way.

I will be checking them out tonight after work if the internet at home cooperates. I feel as a responsible member of this thriving community that it is everyones role to participate... blah blah blah. Everyone check out the flicks! Come'on! DO IT!

Barry, is the DVXFest stuickied or 'announced' somewhere? I'd never really heard of it until a short while ago and then didn't really know what it was all about. Probably due to not finding the right thread. Maybe some special icons and links could be put on the page where the huge advertising banner goes or something? I take it, it's just for DVX owners, but I might at least be able to watch some posts and vote.

Cheers
Aaron

I always watch and vote, though I may not comment much. Hudson and other people who know more what they are talking about do a much better job of that than I. heh! But I look forward every month to the films and the voting. Participating is fun, too. :)

I'm still mulling things over. I watched all the videos a few nights ago and narrowed things down a bit, but I'm actually agonizing over the casting of the vote.
