I saw it (online) a few days ago and felt the same.

Originally, I was excited for something that would be the complete opposite of that; just a nice phone that has various parts (modules) that click-in here and there to create a powerful & super portable RED cinema camera no bigger than a football. Everything smaller and lighter.

What NorBro said. Wow, did they hire a bunch of Lada engineers from the former Soviet Union to design this?
I had some hope that Red was going to change the camera paradigm with the Hydrogen but it appears that they have gone off the deep end.

On one hand they create something absurd like the contraption above, and then they design this.

(I haven't been on REDuser in a few days and no one posted it here so I'm just seeing it.)

Currently, it's not for sale and a rental-only...so gorgeous though.

At least it cuts down on all of the bolt on Gak and wiring that typically hangs off of cinema cameras. I've never been a fan of all of the interfaces, handles and brackets you have to screw into a RED brain. The few times I've shot with them, I am usually bolting around half a dozen "things" onto a RED brain to make it functional, do not like that approach. But with this, even though they've reduced the RED things bolted to the body, you'd still have a Teradek, FIZ and quite a few other things still hanging off of it though for feature or TV production.

Yea, I kept my RED very compact; small prime(s), thin batteries (Hypercore Slims), the DSMC2 side handle to control it (brilliant piece of engineering), and a small lightweight Chinese monitor on top.

That will not work for everyone but a RED run-and-gun b-roll and music video machine under 10lbs was pretty nice for me.

Just had no continuous AF so I sold it...go figure, ha.

[Obviously I knew it had no real AF when buying it but was miserable without it.]

How come? I'm genuinely curious what your thoughts are.

It’s Red’s obsession with 3D. They could be innovating & investing in new ideas, but instead they keep going back to 3D. 3D is all but dead, no one cares about it anymore (some flat out hate it). Red, for some reason, keeps beating this dead horse.

Lot of vapourware. You have to admit that their marketing machine ensures that they still pull through after disasters. Hydrogen one was a disaster. But the way Jim blames the ODM it sounds as if RED is not to be blamed. And the recent mags controversy where they were caught pants down would have killed some other company. Their cultlike following can become a harvard casestudy.
