    RIP Hit Film

I hate it when something you liked suddenly gets shafted. Happens too often. For twenty years I used Drawplus from Serif - it got better and better and I went from version to version. Then bang - they just dumped it. I found a Californian firm called Serious Magic, I did the same - great...

    OTHER: Concert Footage - Lumix S5 - Sigma 35mm f/2.0

I've never been implusive or wanted raw? Perhaps that's a flaw in my process - but to be honest all my career I have been in teams split into creatives and production, and I really struggle in the productions I do where creativity is expected, usually settling back into 'interesting' techniques...

    OTHER: Concert Footage - Lumix S5 - Sigma 35mm f/2.0

No offence meant - but the snag is that while producers and production people see some processes as art, the consumers often see them as mistakes or, like I said, shot on a budget my kids or first year media students. I totally get it that there artistic reasons, but at media colleges and...

    OTHER: Concert Footage - Lumix S5 - Sigma 35mm f/2.0

My view is that my nice big expensive flat screen tv is design to be full of image. I find old BBC 4:3 very strange. You forget it with decent old programmes, but when you get the odd high quality modern one with black bands it irritates. Even worse is wobbly vision. Viewed on a pad or phone...

    OTHER: Concert Footage - Lumix S5 - Sigma 35mm f/2.0

I re-watched with the sound down, and it actually works - I figured it's just me who hates wobbly-cam, but Dough said the same. I think with music subjects it is because you are watching with intent - the hands, the instruments, setting and anything that gets in the way detracts rather than...

    OTHER: Concert Footage - Lumix S5 - Sigma 35mm f/2.0

I'm afraid that as a musician, I did not like it. It's very pretty, but every shot where people were singing and playing and turning knobs was not what we heard, so all the mouth movements, fingers and knob turning non- sync stuff made it very difficult to watch. Probably if you don't play, it...

    Virtual Production Camera Question

I had to go down to London to collect some kit from a prestigious arts centre providing eduction - people between 18-22ish, working on all manner of productions and it was virtual everything! set ups like the one above, and others where the room perimeter was full of sensors, tracking people...

The Incredible Shrinking Spectrum, or, “Why I Really Should Get My Part 74 License”

When our British Government withdrew one block, and paid us compensation, I bought a 2.4GHz, digital system for a theatre i look after. 4channels. Sort of a stop gap till things settled down. That is now a long time and they are due for replacement. In all that time, not one drop out.there is a...

What it's Like Being Retired - Tax Update for 2024

You would not like it in the UK! Ive just started to get our state pension, having hit 66. Here we pay into it all your working life, no matter if you work for others or work for yourself. Ive also got two private pensions, extra funds i put in when you were younger. My government pension is...

SOLD ARRI 300w 650w Fresnel 300 650 Combo Light Kit Heavy Duty Case with Wheels $500

Beam quality is really the deciding factor. In the UK we had a brief spell where we had ‘colouvred’ Fresnel lenses. This probably works with the British spelling of color. The steps of the Fresnel lens were blackened with a paint type application. The claim was it helped spill. Testing them, we...

SOLD ARRI 300w 650w Fresnel 300 650 Combo Light Kit Heavy Duty Case with Wheels $500

I always notice how the specific user base often things and describe their attributes so differently. In TV and film, Fresnel lenses are usually described as harder light useful for use as a key light - then softlight will be bigger physically and softened further with more diffuser. In theatre...

    Backup audio recording

For emergency or secondary use as a backup - sync isn't really an issue now as it's rarely a problem to slip/slide with no timecode if you have a waveform reference - even the one with interference can be used to match sync.

Looking for input on lights and set ideas....

That works, assuming you only ever want 90 degrees. Scaff couplers are really cheap and you can run tube at any angle - disadvantage is you need a spanner/wrench, as they don't have wing-nuts, but wing nut versions are available.

Can tattoos be covered up when acting?

I'm running a theatre show and tattoos look dreadful. Nice costumes ruined by black marks appearing where you don't want them. Worse for dancers in open auditions. The cull rate is always high, but physical features really matter. With so many going for a part, you don't want any excuse to say...

CAMCORDERS: HC-X2 - Weird blue reflection on skin from stage lights

I always smile at this. My JVC ⅓" cameras can render LED lighting really well. My stills cameras that very occasionally do video are so different. My Pentax cameras are pretty good, but the Canons, much less so. The Eos 7 mkII doesn't like blue much, and while the two pentax DSLRs do blue, one...

The aging bodies of DPs & videographers

I've had lower back pain for a while - BUT - I'm sort of retirement age now so figured a few aches and pains are par for the course. I cannot stand fo9r more than about 15 mins, so some camera roles are clearly out. However, this pales into insignificance now. I saw the advert on UK TV for a...

Looking for input on lights and set ideas....

I have this issue in my own studio and my solution was to make a floor suspended rig - ali scaff cut to just clear the ceiling - 4 uprights. Then at the top, a rectangle of tube with simple couplers - each one adjusted to push against the walls, with a small spreader plate to not damage the...

Looking for input on lights and set ideas....

Well - the steel tube means non-standard lighting clamps, and droop with heavier fixtures. How often will lighting be moved? I'd be very tempted to install 2 or three 48-50mm aluminium tubes end to end on the longest run, then fit a number of cross tubes. If you uses swivel scaff couplers or...
