I am self taught when it comes to film making and editing... the way I learned to import video from final cut pro is to use "log and capture" after clipping ins and outs... but I get a lot of errors doing this.. is there a way to import the whole footage at one time?

I recently purchased a dvx100b.. I own an Imac 20' 2ghz 1gb ram and noticed that exporting a short clip I shot takes a long time 35 minutes or so...using Final Cut Pro is this normal?
