OTHER: SONY FX5 on a real project...

Do you remember what focal length and aperture setting you used in the first shot? Is the camera on a slider/dolly?

OTHER: Looks like a new FX camera is on the way

Most of the gear I use was released so long ago that the sales reps in trade show interviews say the "www" part when giving the company website.

OTHER: Panasonic Varicam LT MD to EF Adapter compatibility issue

You have 3 options: Because the flange distances are so close between MD and EF, a simple adapter isn't possible - they either need additional "correction" optics, or they're like an extension tube and don't allow infinity focus. I put correction in quotes because this really needs to be tuned...

    The crazy price of storage!

I predict we'll see more used datacenter SSDs hitting the market, along with new adapters to convert their U.2, U.3, E1.S, E3.S, and E1.L formats to the M.2 and PCIe slots in consumer PCs. The nice thing is they have fairly high endurance, so a few petabytes of program erase cycles to a Kioxia...

OTHER: Looks like a new FX camera is on the way

There's a rule in manufacturing that the cost to fix a mistake goes up 10x for each step of the process it passes through undetected. A defect prevented for $1 during the design stage will cost $10 to correct in production and $100 to fix after it ships. I would rather wait an extra 2 weeks...

Here to Learn How Creators Think, Not Just How Cameras Work

I try to avoid overthinking when it comes to these things too. There are intangibles that make comedy either funny or not. That and the classic quote: “Analyzing humor is like dissecting a frog. Few people are interested. And the frog dies of it.”

Here to Learn How Creators Think, Not Just How Cameras Work

I enjoy a good skit. They usually work based on rhythm, so good editing is key. A couple of points I've noticed are: The first character shown in the skit is usually the protagonist that the audience relates to. When there's a "reveal" in the skit, it's preceded by a reaction shot of the...

Here to Learn How Creators Think, Not Just How Cameras Work

The reason I've heard is that Chromecast and AppleTV devices were only updated to play 24.000 video smoothly within the last five years, while Roku and Amazon Fire Sticks still don't handle it correctly - they'll drop or duplicate a frame every 41~42 seconds, which can cause noticeable judder...

Here to Learn How Creators Think, Not Just How Cameras Work

You might already know this trick, but when I want the viewer to be immersed in the video like they're really there, I shoot in a higher framerate like 60 fps, conversely when my intention is to float the audience through a more dreamy story, I shoot in a lower framerate like 23.976

Remember to budget for the big memory cards if you plan to shoot in any of the higher framerates.

OTHER: Looks like a new FX camera is on the way

    Trying to guess what model name Sony will use for their next Cinema Line camera, I imagine a table like this: 2010 F3 2011 2012 F5 2013 2014 FS7 2015 FS5 2016...

OTHER: Looks like a new FX camera is on the way

I thought the next Sony cine camera was going to be an FX8 to compete with the Canon C400. There were rumors from last summer, and even what appeared to be leaked slides from a presentation last fall. Maybe the rolling shutter from its 12k FF sensor wasn't good enough to compete with the URSA...

    Zaxcom DCiRX

The timecode issue with the larger body Alexas is the LCD screen on the side will lag behind what's recorded by a second or two, so if you hold the recorder or slate next to the display it will appear off, but the files are in sync.

    It's a good camera, sir.

Shield TV and Sony Bravia 8 II 65": how to calibrate colors?

I don't know for certain, but there may be a way to fool the ambient light sensor by blocking it with black tape and then with the auto-brightness setting on, it should reduce the backlight to the lowest level.
