Academy Award-winning Caleb Deschanel would agree (re: relying on natural light). He loves exteriors, backlit by the sun. Check out "The Natural." Granted, he often helps things with an HMI , but isn't afraid to track with a subject with only the sun lighting things from behind...even actresses.

I shot food for a decade for several food clients, including Nestlé. I like a strong backlight in that world.
