I'm sure John wouldn't have said it if it weren't on the table for discussion.

Totally - sorry, didn't mean that as a dig to you at all. I just meant "yeah, what is the 'Hiv'?"

I guess what I really meant was - you don't mean HIV virus? (but felt that was too personal to ask. Even though I just did, I guess.)

No worries, I didn't think you meant it as a dig, I was just saying that John wouldn't say it if it were too personal a topic.

...we're having quite the conversation w/o him.

you mean "hivz" is slang for general sickness, right. (christ, when did I become a fifty year old man who doesn't understand how the kids talk these days.)

WAIT!!! DAMN IT!! I'm so confused now.

EDIT: Okay, I just re-read the progression of these posts. I think I get it now.

I'm starting my own variation - the hivvies. Actually I've had the hivvies for about two weeks now. And it snowed a few inches here today so the hivvies might be around for a couple more days. I'm tired of the hivvies - I need to go to the doctor.

Too lazy to read the whole thread.

My only dissapointment for the night was Crash taking best script. Who would have thought an over indulgent script based on stereotypes we've all seen a million times would win best screenplay?

However, I do think best film was in order. There's a huge difference. This was an important piece of cinema edited brilliantly and directed with a subtle hand I can only dream to grasp someday, but nothing new for the screenwriting world. In fact it was a step backwards from several poignant scripts that have been written time over time again. IMHO, of course.

Agreed the script sucks - painfully. As a result, I don't care how good something is technically, how good actors performances were, etc., etc. If the story sucks, the movie sucks. Content is the engine driving the train. I couldn't agree more with everything else you said, but I'm not nearly as generous with the best pic nod.

OK, so i just sat and watched Hustle & Flow, and the whole movie is about a pimp trying to rap and get out of the pimpgame...hence the PimP song by 3-6 Mafia - its the song from the movie, that the whole damm movie is about

i'm totally convinced that this was the best song for the oscar, and about time hiphop of ANY form gets some recognition on this stage...

you know, one thing that bothers me about the academy awards is I'm not quite sure how things are decided. For instance, War Of The Worlds was the best SFX entry in the bunch , with the infamous shoddy stampede sfx sequence in King Kong, and the rather light sfx in Chronicles of Narnia. But people put war of the worlds, tom cruise, and steven spielberg in the same sentence, and you just know, no matter how perfect the sfx are, they're not going to win. You can't associate those three elements with an oscar in your head. you just can't.

Then you have something like The New World, which was heads and tails better than any of the other films in cinematography. But nobody really saw it. Every other film in that category made more money than it did. So you know people aren't going to vote for it. Most of them haven't even seen it.

I bring this up cause I was filling out a ballot and at first I just asked myself "Which one of these films was the best in this paticular category?" But after a couple of rounds of that, I realized it wasn't that simple. You have to ask yourself questions like "Will the older academy demo shy away from awarding a movie about gay cowboys?" "Did anybody see Capote?" And who actually chooses the winners? Do actors get to vote on sound editing? Cause actors don't know crap about sound editing. They hear loud sound and think "ooh, good sound editing." I'll vote a lot different if I know that just sound editors vote on sound editors rather than everyone.

And another thing that bothers me is the screenplay category. First of all, did people actually READ all the screenplays? Or are they just going off the diaogue they hear in the movie? Cause that ain't the screenplay. You have no idea how rich the script was, and how much the director did or didn't add to that script. If you're going to vote on screenplay, people have to actually read the screenplay. Or else screenplay and picture need to be combined into one category. In addition, why not include all the screenplays that didn't get made into films? You're telling me that those five are the best scripts of the year? Like there aren't unproduced scripts out there that are better?

And while we're trashing the categories, how in the world do people know which director is the best? Were they there on the set every day watching the director make or not make key decisions that saved the film, or made it a lot better, or improved the stuff on the page? Maybe the actors brought those performances. Maybe the cinematographer brought those beautiful shots. How could we possibly know unless we were there.

So yeah. Anyway, good Oscars tonight.

I don't agree with that. Narnia had a ton of effects... they just weren't done very well. (What the hell, WETA?)

i phrased that wrong. i meant sfx light. There were a lot of effects, but it seemed like they were of the light beer variety. Not very filling. Not quite there.

Oh! Yeah, that's a good way to describe it.

Does anyone know where to pick up the shorts? I would love to see them.

Here's my take on the Oscars:

JOn Stewart was OK, his best line the one about pulling down the statue on stage and democracy flourishing. I was laughing my butt off, and my girlfriend seemed confused as to why.

Best Picture should have went to Brokeback or Good Night, Good Luck. I think GNGL was a great movie, and very overlooked.

It was nice to see Hoffman win Best Actor, even though I haven't seen Capote, but I've seen a few clips and I can tell he deserved it.

George Clooney gave the best acceptance speech, by far. Even though I didn't see the latter half of the program.

Three 6 Mafia, I have no qualms about them winning (not my pick though) but they could have at least worn a tux, or something close.

I liked Murderball for Best Doc, but I haven't seen March of the Penquins yet, so I think a trip to blockbuster is in store.

i just want to say one more thing about this then i'm done. its not because i don't like rap that i dont think its music. i dont like country either but THAT is music. so before you say that its because i dont like rap that i dont think its music think again.

Anyway...

I was happy Crash won. I really liked the film even though some of the stereotypes were really blown up and made bigger than in real life. I would have like Good Night to win because it was a really well put together film and such. Oh well, Crash won and I'm fine with that. I really think Good Night should have won Cinematography though. I'm really glad Hoffman won Best Actor although I would have liked to see Phoenix win. Either actor would have been a good choice to win. Best Actress... I go back and think about the Legally Blonde movies and think to myself "this is an Academy Award winner?" I thought it would be cool if Huffman would have won because then she would have an Emmy, Golden Globe, and an Oscar. Haven't seen Transamerica but I've heard a lot of good things about it.
