did you listen to the garbage it was up against? THAT ain't music son

Song of the Year is the one category that I think the Academy seems to half-ass each year. I am always amazed at some of the crap that they nominate each year.

I'm in Medford/Ashland, going to school at Southern Oregon University for the time being. I shoot on DVX100A, doing mostly promos and informational videos for the school. Try to get in the occasional short, but haven't in about six months because of my work/school schedule.

So is anybody unhappy/happy about any of the other winnings tonight? I really thought the short little clip of Six Shooter (Best Live-Action Short) looked interesting. Has anyone seen it? Do you know where I can find it (or any of the shorts for that matter?) It's so hard to see some of these shorts unless you're travelling to the festival circuits.

I think we can all agree that "If you're really fleeing from a car crash, it's not a good idea to run in slow motion" was HILARIOUS.

John Stewart = Worst Host Ever

Edit: Actually it could be a tie with Whoopi Goldberg for that honor.

Edit #2:
Even Letterman was better

Edit #3: How the **** do we go from Bob Hope/Johnny Carson to this clown ('clown' meaning schmuck, not 'clown' meaning funny)?

I kind of wanted Batman to win for Cinematography. But that's only because of a HUGE bias.

Batman winning would have been sweet. I am kind of surprised that it didn't go to Brokeback or Good Night. I haven't seen Memoirs yet. Anybody that think it had the best cinematography out of the bunch?

Anyone glad "Tsotsi" (South Africa) won best foreign film? I'm looking forward to seeing it. American Cinematographer has a big article on it this month (March).

"rap isn't music "

...sigh...

just when I think this board is one of the coolest places in the world

try it isn't "your kind of music"

but it is by definition, music

and yes the same was said of rock, jazz, and I'm sure a score of other firsts

"rap isn't music"

*sigh*

also the realm of classical and avant guard music studied in the most sophisticated music classes at the most renowned university programs all over the world far surpass rap music in the realm of atonality and alleged lack of melody

the following is regarding John Cage's work and is from the following webpage:
http://www.classicalnotes.net/columns/silence.html
4'33" was Cage's favorite work. Written in 1952...

...H
ere's how one performance went: A tuxedoed performer came on stage, sat at a grand piano, opened the lid, occasionally turned some music pages but otherwise sat as quietly as possible for 4 minutes and 33 seconds, then rose, bowed and left. And that was it.

Although often described as a silent piece, 4'33" isn't silent at all. While the performer makes as little sound as possible, Cage breaks traditional boundaries by shifting attention from the stage to the audience and even beyond the concert hall. You soon become aware of a huge amount of sound, ranging from the mundane to the profound, from the expected to the surprising, from the intimate to the cosmic –shifting in seats, riffling programs to see what in the world is going on, breathing, the air conditioning, a creaking door, passing traffic, an airplane, ringing in your ears, a recaptured memory. This is a deeply personal music, which each witness creates to his/her own reactions to life. Concerts and records standardize our responses, but no two people will ever hear 4'33" the same way. It's the ultimate sing-along: the audience (and the world) becomes the performer.

While I'm griping...

Why the **** couldn't they have added Don Knotts and Darin McGavin to the montage of artist we lost? Knowing that they had it finished a month ago, and couldn't be bothered to tinker with it this late in the game. Disgraceful.

Way disappointed in pic of the year (sigh). I thought Crash was easily the weakest film in the line up. EASILY. Another rich white guy courageously teaching us all a lesson about racism - give me a break. Matt Dillion and Terence Howard both had good performances, but the script was super-cheese if you ask me. Speaking of, that was the second-worst Oscar choice - best original screenplay.

I think the combination of the LA setting, the ensemble cast, and the easily digestible flick dressed in "difficult" movie clothes were the reasons for the win.

Never in my wildest dreams would I have guessed that I would pick a Spielberg flick over a much smaller independent as the more ballsy and relevant film. Well, it was a great year for film, nonetheless.

Don Knotts died this year - 2006.

It's interesting that you say that. Because I guessed that Good Night, and Good Luck would win because Edward R. Murrow's actions affected everyone in that in the industry.
