How wide is the 13x lens?

Ok, I don't get why they list the 13 wide as being "3.8 - 49.4mm"

I know that with my DVX and wide angle adapter the widest setting is like 18 mm

What does "3.8" refer to in the specs for the focal range of the 13x lens?

3.8 refers to the actual millimeter focal length of the lens, not any sort of "equivalent".

On a DVX the stock lens provides a wide angle of 4.5mm. The JVC would therefore be wider. If you compare it to the JVC's stock lens, that's 5.5mm, so the 3.8mm's field of view would be kind of akin to using the stock lens with a .7 wide-angle converter.

(of course the 13x lens will deliver a much better image than the stock lens with a .7 converter!) I'm just saying that if you want to compare equivalent focal lengths, that's how you could think of it.

The 18mm you quote for the DVX would be a so-called "35mm equivalent". Not the actual mm of the lens. You must be using a .5 or a .6 wide-angle adapter on the DVX. That would give you about a 2.5mm focal length. So your DVX+WA should be delivering a wider field of view than the JVC 13x lens would, since it's 3.8 mm.

good luck..

thanks guys, the stuff I shoot is mostly full wide. Until recently I had no confusion about what HD camera I would get. I was dead set on getting the HVX but now am am considering the HD 100. If I did get the HVX I would put the x6 Century lens on it.

Since I need a really wide lens I am wondering how much the picture will be compromised when using a wide angle adapter on the 16x lens of the JVC. Would the picture just be less sharp? I don't really care about distortion. I would use as wide of an adapter as I could get my hands on without going fish-eye.

Anyone know the widest adapter available for the 16x lens? Also, would the same adapter fit on the 13x lens?

The JVC offering is 0.82 (Click) and is made for the 16x lens. We are using one in tight quarters and it does increase the FOV but not as wide as the 13x (3.5mm widest). What are you shooting? Interiors? Landscape? What exactly? The 3.5mm (13x) would be ideal for most applications.

I shoot people indoors. I need lots of things in focus and a wide field of view. I need at least as wide as my DVX with the x6 wide adapter. So like 18 mm.

I do notice that my picture with the converter on is less "filmic" or just of lower quality on my DVX then when I am just using the stock lens. I wish I did not have to use any adapters but if the 13x wide is not as wide I guess I have to use an adapter regardless.

According to the chart I list above you should be able to get approx 70 degree angle with the 13x lens (3.5mm) which is huge over the 48 degrees you get with the stock 16x lens (5.5mm). With the wide angle adapter on the 16x stock lens you should get 58 degrees. Nevertheless, you can see the 13x lens is very wide indeed.

I had an opportunity to test the 13x3.5 lens a couple weeks ago. It is a very well made lens and wider than you would expect. It has much less CA (although it is still present to some degree) but the lens hardly breathes at all.
I'm throwing together a review now, but here is a sneak peak at the breathing comparison.

Here is the wide end field of view comparison. I established these FOV through physically locking the camera, changing lenses and marking the corners of the frame on a white board. I was surprised that the 3.5mm measured so much wider than the 5.5mm with the Wide adapter on. The wide adapter is supposed to render and equivalent of 4.5mm, so I assumed it would be somewhere inbetween.
I superimosed an image I quickly shot in a car to show how wide the lens really is in "the real world."
