25p and PAL DVXs...

Hey all,

I'm a Brit who's finding it hard to get some real good information on the PAL DVX100Ae and it's 25p functions and so forth.

I'm not knocking Barry, but I picked up his infinitely useful book only to find it's disappointingly light on PAL info and the diferences between the PAL and NTSC camera formats.

So I ask, has anyone got any tips for PAL DVX usage, or a link to a Adam Wilt-style site for PAL DVXs?

Also, does a PAL DVX look less filmic because of its 25p capabilities? What's the difference between 25p at 1/50th shutter speed and 24p at 1/48th?

Cheers.

25p is just PALs film standard, you can barely tell a difference I think it looks fine, often people with sony's Z1U use the 25p function because the fake 24p it comes with looks like crap.

In reality 25p is better than 24p, faster rate looks smoother...

And there are none of those stupid pull down etc. problems with the tecnically simple 25p we lucky PAL shooters have.

You won't see any real difference between 24p and 25p. And since the PAL version got the same cine-gamma and matrix, no it won't be less filmic.

Here's some 25P 1/50 footage for you:

25P 1/50, normal gamma/matrix:

And here a little more action, although not very filmic at all (25P shot 1/120):
www.techcrew.se/nimbus_short.wmv

and a slightly longer version at:
www.techcrew.se/nimbus_long.wmv

- Sorry for the heavy compression on the last two clips, but that's all I could found online at the moment.

If you have any more specific questions feel free to ask again.

...and yeah, like Petrus pointed out we are lucky not having to deal with pulldowns etc. Plus we get some extra resolution!

Yup, there is not catch with PAL really.

Johan Lundberg, är du svensk? :) One question, how do you set the shutter speed to 1/100? The closest thing to 1/100 on my camera is 1/120, and I still have a PAL camera.

I am interested the wide angle converter

I am interested the wide angle converter

Thanks a lot

Norbert,
I probably remembered it wrong, it must have been 1/120 shutter. It is however possible to get a shutter speed of 99.5 or 100.2 if you use the syncro scan feature, but the footage I shot was most likely 1/120. Jag är svensk! =)

overlord,
I used the Century Optics .7x wide angle lens. As you can see in some of the footage there is some barrel distortion when used in the wider end of the zoom, If you stick to Z10 and up it looks great.

If you have any further questions feel free to ask!

I thought so. Well, as long as the shutter can be set to at least 1/100 it should work just fine. I guess I could use 1/100.2. I have the syncro scan set to 1/50, but shutter OFF = 1/50 on a PAL camera anyway right?

Gott, då är jag inte ensam svensk här på forumet i alla fall. :)

yep, shutter off = 1/50 on PAL cameras.

We have a few swedes here on the forum, maybe we should all join together and make a swedish dvxuser group. =)

Or scandinavian group? ;-)

Some interesting information there. Thanks for replying.

As for the 25p group, I'm up for that.

So.. the next step is maybe ask the administrator to have a 25p sticky???

Some veteran dvxuser.com user should start the "paperwork" I´m just a humble beginner...

I´d like to ask anyways, as a newbie, pal shooting speed are, 12.5p, 25p, 50i
In the manual there isnt a single mention about this or how to change this.
If i want to change my shooting speeds to experiment, how do i do it?
Thank you

A 25p group would be so nice... a lot of questions in this forum regarding PAL cameras are not answered at all... wich I do understand.

Yes - good idea!
Here is one more Swede who bought a DVX 100B some days ago.
Im just studying Barrys DVX book and the manual and are
testshooting different ways.
I´ll shoot a churchconsert on thursday and will use my "old"
Pana GS 400 as second and fixed camera.
Im thankful for any advice.

Welcome aboard!
I would say keep the DVX in interlaced mode (scene file F1) and use normal settings (gamma, matrix etc). You will have to do some color correction in post but it shouldn't be that much of a headache, also the interlaced mode will give you some better low light sensitivity, which won't hurt in a church. How are you planning on picking up the audio?

A 25p group would be pretty cool, but I'm not sure I have the time needed to start up such a thing in a proper way. If someone else do, sure, I'm all in!

/Johan
