The "official" footage with noise thread

Okay guys, this forum has been killing me:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) ! You've all swayed me in multiple directions... I was going to order this camera at lunch today, but then i started reading the threads on noise issues with the camera last night and couldn't sleep. I know this is a hotly debated topic and i may have missed a posting like this before but for once and for all, can somebody just post some images/super short clips that they think are "noisy" and we can all (respectfully) weigh in on them? I know we're all going to be viewing them on computer monitors and probably LCD monitors (which is apparently the worst) so keeping that in mind, i'd like to see what i'm getting into.

Ideally (and i know i'm asking alot) if you could take a still frame and circle the areas in photoshop where you see noise and then post a looping 3 second clip of the footage that would be great. I know we all want to light everything properly, but I'd also like to see what low light does to the image quality. Obviously well lit images are the best, but i'd like to see what happens if an error is made and we have to deal with a noisy image. like i said i think the best thing would be for super short clips that loop so we can get an idea of what the noise pattern is like without killing somebody's bandwidth.

If someone really want's to go nuts they can post some dvx-100 or cannon or whatever noise footage and we can all debate.

Thanks guys, and i hope everyone realizes how awesome this forum is and how extremely helpful it is for lurkers like me who are pining over a decision to drop 6-10k on a camera!:dankk2:

personally i think the noise issue comes with people having no idea how to light properly. this isn't a home video camera, it's made for production purposes, so light it like you would for film. i'm not bashing you chris, but i wouldn't go off other people's opinions of the camera unless you try it out for yourself.

Chrisw,

Thats a good request...
-in the mean time, I can hardly wait, where were you going to purchase the camera at? I assume you where going to walk out with camera on your hands. This long waiting time at local retailers is driving me nuts and want my camera now. Dude, sorry for hijacking your original post, I am also very interested in the same answers... but am ready to buy the camera after reading so many articles and viewing so many clips. Cheers to you!

Thanks Roman and Justin!

R: I was going to order from a supplier that will have one in stock next week. so I'm a wait-er like you, but i need to decide now since it's not being held for me. man... we're really talking about this thing like it's an illicit substance or something.

J: Thanks, and I totally agree that this is personal decision, but if one of you guys is into it, I know it'd be helpful to people like me see some original footage of this "noise" before i drop the cash. It definitely sounds like lighting is going to be the problem with all these shots-- I just want to make sure i am aware of how bad "bad" can get. Also, this problem is accentuated in the fact that apparently the lcd panel doesn't indicate this noise while shooting, heightening the chances that your lighting could be bad without you knowing it (i know you shouldn't be relying on it, but i imagine it happens more than people admit). Anyway, I'm a huge fan of this camera and this forum, so please don't be bummed i'm asking for all this stuff!

Chris... The noise really can be dealt with and is only going to ever be mentioned and commented upon by people on this forum. I do think it requires a bit of dealing with.. but nothing that's a deal breaker.

I think even better than downloading footage is to find a place close to you that has one to demo.. or find a person with the camera to go and check out yourself. Seeing is certainly believing.. but I understnad the feelings you have. The uncertainty and the fears because for most of us this will the most expensive piece of gear that we've legally purchased.

I have seen some stunning video. I think that the noise appears when we try to push the exposure to make it brighter and such. I think this camera looks awesome in darks and especially when a bright hot spot is in the frame. The noise happens on those muddy murky areas that aren't shadows and aren't highlights.. but merky in betweens.

The settings and gamma correction help... I also do agree that things get magnified with the LCD.. especially when it's done via the DVI for some reason...

Best advice is to check it out in person. There's a lot of other things to consider besides this. I got to mess with the Canon, Sony, JVC and Panny all on the same day and check out their images.. and weight, etc. I know everyone walked away with a different impression...

If you are still uncertain... don't buy until you get to check one out in person. It's a fat bastard of a camera.. but I'm a chubby chaser and totally sold on this. I think 95 percent of all footage is great right there.. with 5 percent of doc style footage looking kind of shabby.. but only by comparisson.

Another thing I love is that this camera absolutely can't get enough color. Bright primary colors just pop off the screen. I think that it will change production design and costuming and make-up and all that jazz. It will show up the good stuff and the bad equally...

check out the cam and then rest easy bro. It is a big investment... to be uncertain about this close to the camera being yours... Who knows you might like the JVC or canon... or possibly decide to shoot with the FP Pixelvision. It's all subjective and a personal choice....

My decision to get the HVX was easy, I've used the DVX100 and loved the
look of it, ... then along comes the HVX, which has that same wonderful
filmic look, PLUS HD, variable frame rates, etc.! It's a dream come true.:)

This year there will be some VERY impressive, beautifully-lit movies made with this camera.

Mr. T says: I pity the fool who doesn't light properly for video, then blames the camera.:costumed-smiley-047

yeah man, that's the hard part, nowhere to check it out in person before buying right now... at least i'm assuming that since they're flying off the shelves as soon as they come in! Anyway, Thanks for all the great advice and if anybody gets to it, please post some shots! especially those critical of the noise issue!

Noise in the image has noting to do with bad lighting. I personaly often use strong side light and very little (or non) fill so by definition you end up with very sculptural faces with strong one side (but not over exposed) and dark other side. It has worked beatifuly with many cameras but with HVX is "funky." Next time i'm forced to use this camera i'll post some stuff so you can judge for yourselve because in the end all of those comments are just opinions and you have to choose whathever works best for you.

I agree 100% with Patryk Rebisz. So far I've found that shooting with one or two bright lights on a subject and just letting the background drop off does create some funky noise in the image.
