Mic Hand Grips (mount) for DVXuser members.

I've been wanting to build up a collection of helpful items for the budding filmmaker... you know the one... the guy who is overwhelmed with a list of needs and out of cash? Hopefully I can pull this off so that it's worth my time and make some people happy along the way.

I've told a thousand people about what mic mounts I like and how I use 'em... but I'm sure some of you guys don't know what to do when you don't need a boom and you just want to hand-hold that shockmounted mic next to your cam... like for interviews or situations that require "arm's length booming".

These aren't perfect. I figure I'll be the first to throw out any negative comments... since somebody always comes along... but at less then 1/3 the price of a Remote Audio Grip or Rycote's version of the same thing... I think this is pretty darn reasonable. About the only negative thing I can think of is I made these with tight tolerances thinking I could avoid any adhesive on the foam sleeve... the foam is held on by friction... which has it held pretty good but it IS removeable. In any kind of use this is not likely to ever be a problem as it's solid... but unless I add an adhesive (which at this point I don't want to) then you CAN pull off the foam.

Anyway... enough fluff... this is it:

For the record these grips are available RIGHT NOW... I've had a bunch of people tell me they are interested... but don't be shy... if you want one then Paypal to mgettemeier at charter dot net.

I will combine shipping on these, cables, lights, or anything else that will be coming from me.

For good shockmount advice check the audio forum. My favorite good mount is a K-Tek K-SM or K-SSM (with soft bands)... My favorite Cheap mount is a Sabra-Som SM1 (or whatever it's called) or else the PSC Universal mount.

The only problem with the shockmount issue is that I happen to think the K-Tek mount is WORTH the cost! I have TWO of them!

If you want a cheap, effective shockmount then the SabraSom from Sound-Room for $49 is cheap... and effective, but it in no way compares to the elegant and minimalist design of K-Tek products!

How much do you think it would cost me to mill 3 pieces of precision kit out of billet aluminum... all with tolerances to about 1/32" and then have custom durometer molded rubber mounts to attach to that... and then add full range tilt flexibility?

My guess is that if I did them in volume I'd be lucky to get 'em done for under $100 anyway. That K-SSM is a very precision little tool... and LIGHT is RIGHT... so the minimalist design isn't a skimpy design... it's beautiful in it's simplicity.

I'm doing the grips because black delrin isn't that hard to machine to close tolerances... and of course there are a lot of people who had to scrape their cash together for the gear I suggest... and once again I just thought this would be a fun thing to offer for the members since it will do the same job for so cheap!

As I have time I will try my best to address some other items that I feel are really high $ for what you get... but the K-SSM is a little piece of jewelry... I'm not going to try to make Seiko watches either. :)

"Do it Your self" for your self is OK.

Copying and selling to others, May get you in trouble...

You are clever enough to do better then plain copies of others creations.

Innovate don't just Imitate.

Please see my comments regarding the above statement in the Grip thread that's in the audio section.

By the way... I'd rather not sell any of my stuff to ungrateful noobs... so if that's your nature please don't buy anything from me. I'm not using my time in an effort to HELP the forum members so that some fly-by can pop in with a negative attitude.

Okay so which one of THESE companies did you ALSO wag your finger at?

Gimme'... a total... freakin'... break. :nads:

Don't mind him, Matt. He might not have been around enough to get what this community is. What you did here is exactly the kind of thing that makes DVXuser special--helping eachother out.

Your stature here is self evident, Matt.

Matt -

I agree with lpc. I for one thank you for taking the time to come up with your creations for those of us not rolling in the dough. Your lights are still on my list...

Keep up the good work.

Yeah, I ordered a light from Matt and its on its way!

Trust me Matt, there is no way anyone with half a clue can accuse you of not being innovative. Your attention to detail alone gives you the right to have a big audience. And your skill set and ability to actually create whats going on in your head is definitely a HUMONGOUS bonus for this forum. (in other words, naysayers, shut up or Matt will stop what hes doing or start charging real prices for his stuff.)

Through a little quick research I figured out who that person is and what's going on there. No big deal. 95% of the communication I get about all my projects is positive.

It is ironic that the "MattRig" that I'm working on does have some innovative things associated with it... and I don't think that guy's gonna' appreciate the innovation or price of that thing either. There's a product connection that became obvious to me... and my rig isn't anything like that product even though the two do serve a similar purpose.

Yeah. What he said.

haha you tell em Matt! and anyways its not like Matt is out there on the mass market selling these things.

2 minutes ago I just got a shipment of lights, grip and cable with a bunch of other goodies from Matt. Man o man these babies look sweet. Definitely well built and I'm about to hop on these and give em a whirl. Thanks again Matt!

Bryan... I'm going to try to get my site in shape... the only reason I originally got a website is so I could post mic samples and comparisons. I'd be telling people to get one mic or not get another... and I started feeling stupid trying to describe the whys and why nots... so I started putting up sound bites to say, "listen to this... this is why".

So anyway... my website is in DESPERATE need of a polish. So as of now you can only see the stuff I'm making on THIS site... DVXuser. Maybe I'm not a good businessman... but every video item I started making has come from the desire to share my own solutions to frustrating or costly problems... or to express another artistic outlet which I feel dovetails well with video production.

Simply put... I'm having FUN doing this stuff because I like the people on this forum... so this is my goofy way of trying to create a win/win situation. I have never looked at any of this as an actual business... but I will say that I have a LOT of stuff I'm working on. My biggest limitation is TIME... and that is just a tad ahead of the other limitation... MONEY... so as I have extra of one or both... more things will come out of my shop.

All you have to do is check the DIY, Lighting, Audio, and Marketplace threads every week or two... I'm swamped with production and other work this week but I'm eager to get some other stuff going... The shoot I was on today renewed my passion to create a handheld rig that's lightweight and adds massive stability to ordinary handheld situations. I could have really used it... and once the next two days are over I'm sure it'll be all I can think about. After 6 hours straight handheld my biceps are so pumped they hurt. If that isn't a situation begging for an answer I don't know what is. I had a monopod but the shots were going from 4" off the floor to as high as I could reach!

I got a lot going through my head this week... lots of cool stuff that I want to build... it probably doesn't help that I was shooting a robotics contest all day (and tomorrow... and the next day).
