To Blur or not to Blur

I'm thinking of having my beginning credits appear over a telegram. I want the audience to read the credits and not the telegram. If I blur the telegram footage will they wonder why it is out of focus or should I leave it in focus. The credits (one at a time) come on screen and then fade out. Also, the audience does get to read the telegram right after the credits.

yah man put a slight blur on the telegram, just enough so u can still tell what it is, dont worry about the audience lol! they arent that stupid as u may think.

You can also lighten and desaturate the colors, which will make the telegrame just a bit more like a plain background. It's possible, even, that it could substitute for soft focus. Or you could start out on it in focus, rack focus until it's soft, and then superimpose your titles.

I agree with dbarak, start out in focus (very briefly) and then soften the focus. By doing this, the audience's attention will be directed off the telegram and to your credits almost like a transition. When the credits are done rolling put it back into focus to direct the attention back on the telegram.

Hope this helps.
