How can I build my own Firestore HDD?

If I have a battery powered harddrive casing with a drive of my choice in it, can I directly stream to it from the camera? If not, why not? What is the Firestore doing differently?

The Firestore actually creates the proper files on the HDD by interpereting the data stream sent by the HVX. The camera does not write any files itself -- it only sends the video info down the firewire pipe. Without some kind of processing to convert this data into files, you get nothing.

You can, however, simply plug a firewire drive into the HVX and transfer files from the P2 card to the drive -- but this can only happen once they've been recorded on the P2 card. It's not a live process.

You know, I really feel we need a HVX-200 FAQ besides the one on at the front of this board that's a reprint of the Panasonic one. Should I start putting one together? I mean, I own one of the suckers and all.

It would cost about $500 (depending on size of capture drive) to roll your own using a single-board computer with 1394/USB, and SATA interfaces (booting linux from flash). Something like this. If you want to go overboard, something like this. I just found this tantalizing screen.

The hard part will be converting the stream to AVI format, but I'm sure a $1000 bounty on one of the Linux driver newsgroups will solve it.

I'll definitely be looking at this more seriously when I get my (PAL) HVX in a couple months.

I thought about the mini boards before as well...

But whats wrong with windows? [apart from boot time and program loading time]

I agree though on that part linux woulod be best.

Anyway one could always make a rig for the camera man... A backpack with the computer attached to it with the Hds chruning away capturing the Hd video. Running on its own battery supply [attached to the backpack]

Heck you could build an entire steady cam system with the thing attached :p

Anyway what sort of computing power would you require to encode the HD footage corectly on the fly? PLayback on modern machines usealy need 2ghz plus and a chunck of ram but what about just encoding?
