Yeah... I work full time at a small production company. I mainly do editing and cinematography. But I do other stuff too. Web work, graphic design, DVD authoring. Lot's of stuff. I make my short films on the side, off work hours.
yeap i sure do. i love the fact that i can work 1 day, and make more than i would the whole month of working in a part-time job! + i'm having fun and doing what i love! music videos/ commercials/ live events/ etc.
Used to make my money doing both film and stills, then I got a good contract doing just still work making more money so I went with the money. I'm enjoying doing video productions now for fun......much less stress.
im a freelance editor that cuts everything from audio commentaries and making of's to trailers and tv spots. and now i've partnered with a producer and started my own company -- an HD post-production boutique.
I make my living as an actor, writer, acting coach and director....but it's been slow lately.
Ebbs and flows.
Some one's tag line here read something like "Artists should quick their day job". I agree with that completely. Art is a full time job. But, brother, it ain't easy.
I've been using my DVX to live for about a year and a half now. Until very recently I was struggling and was always in danger of having to get another jobby job, but I managed to barely (and when I say barely...I really do mean it) get by...paying the four credit card bills (maxed em out to get started) and being able to contribute very little to my family (wife believed I could make it work and did her best to be patient).
This year things have finally started to work out...It's looking like I'm going to have a good year. Matter of fact a month ago I was finally able to retire my $5 a month dialup and am now cruising on 3mb cable...what a relief! Hell, I had to have that if I was going to have Isara as my homepage!
I live in a rural, low per capita income area and there's not any commercial work or music video work to be had (with any degree of steadyness)...but there are plenty of folk getting married! I started out with a general videography business but quickly moved my focus to weddings and when the booking season began in Jan of this year things finally started happeing and I'm finally able to begin shutting down the desperate survival mode that my nervous system has been in for quite some while and my wife is getting much happier...as a matter of fact on some of the bookings I have I'll be making more for one wedding than she does for an entire month working for the local school system (in charge of the migant education program) and more than I have ever made per week working for a corporation (or anything else I've done).
I cannot ****ing stand having to give up my personal freedoms and kiss ass at a job...I've spent a significan amount of energy throughout my adult life avoiding jobs, but now that I have a wife and son I had to find a way to provide income...I'm am humbly grateful for what digital video and artistic inspiration are giving me. It's been a long, draining and above all terrifying struggle I've fought against being "just another brick in the wall"...it's taken a toll on me with very similar effects to a post war trauma, but I've finally made it work and now I drop to my knees and give thanks...it really means more to me than I could ever express here.
So far, I don't make money at it. I've just spent money on it.
I am a stay-at-home dad of two great kids. Most challenging job I have ever had... top's my time in the navy and my time as a fire fighter, hands down. I do portrait paintings, web design and other random art related jobs to support my addiction to filmmaking. My brother-in-law and I have only been going at this for a little over two years now. We have been putting ourselves through our own home-school film school and building equipment like mad. Took me a while, but I found what I was meant to do.
Yessah, I'm a stay at home dada too...got a four year old son, and one of the strongest motivators I have is being able to pick him up from PreK every day. I don't know how to explain it (without typing an essay) but that simple little moment and act each day means a whole lot to me, and I'm sure it is making a lifelong difference in his life not having to be raised by baby sitters and daycare centers. We have the most awesome little time just from me picking him up from school and being here with him during the rest of the day.
