Skate Footage 60p

Here's some tests I did over the weekend. Some of it is a little over exposed in some places but I think it looks good given the lighting conditions. I also noticed something odd. In the second clip when I'm pulling back I can see a slight jerky motion to the picture. I'm not sure what it is yet but I'm going to try and see if I can recreate it.

Just for the record, the timelapse stuff on my site was shot with a Canon 20D. I wish the HVX could do timelapse like that.

i think you could do timelapse like that with the HVX...

there's this script for vegas called "timebandit" from veggie toolkit.

You can shorten the 24p clip to any time you want.

example, 10 minute clip shortened to 2 seconds.

I use a DVX but I've been able to get some pretty cool timelapse from it.

One of these days when I get more tape, I'm going to try and do a 60 minute clip shortened down to around 10-20 secs.

Tjohara99, trust me you can't do the same type of timelapse I did with my 20D with a DVX or HVX. Unless you know how to leave the shutter open for 2 seconds or longer. I'm sure you could make some timelapse from the HVX or DVX look similar to the 20D timelapse if you messed with it in After Effects. The thing you have to look at also is that the 20D is way more sensitive to light, especially if the shutter is left open.

That would be funny little kids asking for an HVX to go out and film themselves skating. I wish I had this camera in high school because I could have gotten some sick footage of skating and people doing stupid stuff.

I know that some of the skate and snowboard vids shoot some of their stuff on 16mm. Mainly it seems for the slow-mo. Maybe people will start to shoot that footage on the HVX.

You are talking about me. I just bought this camera (it should be here Thursday). I have been making Wakeboarding dvds for the past 2 years. The 60P capabilities of this camera are going to completely overtake the "board sports" industry. There has been a growing belief that you had to shoot 16mm at double-speed to get good results. Digital has been frowned upon by the top videographers in my industry. I look for this camera to change all of that. Now I can spend my budget on something more creative, instead of spending it on film and all the costs that come with it.

Sorry to seem confused when you say 24n 60fps.... did you shoot in 60 slowed down to 24?

Just getting a grasp of VFR so just wondering what you shot in.

Boomerang, I shot it in 720p 24 native at a frame rate of 60fps. The camera plays it back at 24fps and you get slow-mo right in the camera, right after you shot it.

MrPolarBare, I see no reason to shoot board sports or anything that finds its end result in DVD on 16mm just for the slow-mo. I know that this camera will help you out quite a bit. I plan on using it more for making shorts and pitches for scripts. But I'm also working on a skate & snowboard video for a shop. Plus you don't have to ever see any of those tricks that didn't turn out. I mean you should always keep the good falls and stuff like that. But the ones that the rider wasn't happy with and that look like poo you should delete. Save the space on the card and on your drive. Its an amazing camera and I hope you enjoy it once you get your hands on it.

Very excellent timelapse. Did you have the Canon connected to a laptop? I have the Nikon D70 and a new 17" PB. The Nikon capture software works for timelapse but I get exposure flucations even though I am in manual. I just updated everything so I cannot figure out whats up.

Yeah, I can hardly wait. The variable frame rate and the 4:2:2 color compression for Chromakey makes this an invaluable tool for me at this price point. Those 2 features are the main reasons why I bought this camera, and they are 2 features that the HDV cameras don't have.

wow, that timelapse footage
what more can i say
how on earth did you capture such smooth trails, i really need to know how you shot this stuff, no way it was interval, its too damn smooth
tell me your secrets!

nvm 599,
checked out that canon 20d, and i'm pretty sure its not possible to pull that off with anything but a stills camera, love it though, truly amazing

I capture everything with a tripod. Also I capture the frames one right after another. So maybe that's the reason why it looks so move. Thanks for looking.

Forgive me if this question seems idiotic, but what is the difference between timelapse and simply increasing the speed of the footage?

Same effect. It just looks better if you do a true timelapse.
When you speed up the footage in post you can introduce artifacts. Plus you would have to shoot tape which would probably be DV and not be HD.

Shooting timelapse with the 20D lets me keep the shutter open for much longer than I could ever with the HVX or any video camera that I know of. So if you did shoot timelapse with the HVX or DVX it wouldn't look the same. At least the night stuff with cars and whatever. Stuff in the day you could just shoot an hour of tape or P2 footage and then speed it up.
