I got my HD100 yesterday. The camera rocks!

It's not a bad lens if you consider that it's resolving HD decently except at the extreme areas of the lens and it's a 5K camera. The plus side is that you can change the lens unlike the Sony and Panasonic.

I wondering the same question.

Stevet

I bought some last night from an outfit in LA. 23 bucks and you get 3300mAh

http://www.calcellular.com/bn-v428u.html

BTW I was filming a band last night and the 24P cadence is second to none. Holy SH^T just wonderful.

However the SSE F$%$ed half my footage up. A little in 0db. However I like to gain up to 9db/12db or more. I like the gritty look for docs and bands playing in lowlight with striking colors, smoke and etc.

That friggin SSE pissed me off. I told one of the band members when reviewing it that it would not be an issue soon. However how embarrassing to say , Check out the new production tool, yep HD is great, eeeeee just ignore that SSE. Arrrghhhhh!

cause its a really bad lens :)

Just another POV...

I think it's a great lens for $800. It has:

1-Mechanical iris

2-Manual mechanically linked focus

3-Manual mechanically linked zoom (with nice smooth drag, I might add)

4-Continously variable motorized zoom...down to creeping speeds.

5-Capability to be linked to a Preston Microforce controller.

These are all features I had written off in this price range. I'll take these items in trade for having to stay off the long end of the lens while wide open...which appears to be the big trade-off here. The CA is no biggie now that I know when and how it happens and can avoid it.

Nate , you took the exact words right out of my mouth.

Can anyone find a better lens for 1/3 ccd bayonet with these controls for $800?

Nadda, ain't gonna happen! As of now!

lol.. ok guys.. sure, its a good deal at $800, but your kidding yourselves if you try and call it a great lens.

After three days I still couldnt figure out if the Zoom was the Focus or the Focus was the zoom... the lens breaths more than a $29 zoom lens off ebay. forget shifting focus at all during a shot, lol, wowzers.

anyways.. i can't believe i need to even tell people that its a bad lens... and Im surprised Nate your sticking up for it.

But... as mentioned, it can be changed, which makes the HD100 so attractive, and like i said, if you put a better lens on this camera, it could do some serious damage.

What other standard camera batteries can I use, are there 3rd party batteries at fry's that work when I dont want the IDX onboard?

I have 4 Power2000 purchased on B&H. With 3200mAh they perform better than the JVC ones. Be aware from cheap batteries on Ebay, I read some posts from people having problems with those batteries. I wouldn't put one on my HD100.

BTW... I have my 2 JVC, 4 Power2000 and 1 Power2000 charger for sale... :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I also think the lens is dang nice for the price.

I shot some footage yesterday at an old western town, Goldfield Ghost town, Apache Junction, Arizona
The picture quality is awesome.

To say the least, I'm very happy with the HD100.
The only thing that worries me is- when will I be able to afford another !

I'll post some footage soon.

Steve

That lens is pretty bad. Even fixed lens on consumer $200 digicams these days have apochromatic elements and very small aberations (in %, only 1/5 to 1/10 the abberations of the JVC bundled lens). ANY SD lens is night and day compared to the bundled lens. Try an SD lens if an HD is out of reach. Any aftermarket SD lens will do the kind of pixels we get with affordable HD cameras easily and with great MTF.

I've been looking for someone who has that exact scenario. Sounds like you do. Can you kindly post some footage (m2t's) displaying the quality. That would be a help. Plus, how do you have the lens mounted to the camera? And what lens?

thanks

Steve you live in Chandler. My little Nieces live there too. I'm planning a trip to AZ to see them maybe in march.

I look forward to seeing footage.

What detail setting have you been using? Curious!

Michael,

Today I used Paolo Ciccone setting posted on his web site:
http://www.paolociccone.com/hd100-calibration.html

He used a DSC calibration chart to dial the settings in on the HD100.

I realize, these settings used on my camera may only be close.
I am going to break down and buy a DSC chart.

One thing for sure, that setting sure looks good on my camera!

Thanks for the battery connection. I'm going to have to order one.

Also check out Stephen's, Nate's, and Tim's scene files posted at dvinfo.
Nice stuff!

Sure I lost some *episodes* of Pappas' life ! :)
I was sure you've bought an Xlh1! After the famous clip in dvinfo where you see all the prints of cameras' footage? That footage was disquieting, just reminded me a "snuff movie" or something alike...
Are you really Pappas? I was waiting for the second part of footage, I had fear you just killed yourself in that strange *snuff* like-video! :zombie_smiley:
My imagination is so scary! :crybaby:

Lens breathing is rarely an issue in my book. It's only distracting if you're doing a rack and everything in the frame is static. If anything is moving, either the camera or the subject(s), my eye doesn't notice the edges of the frame changing. Which is everything I've done, so far.

For me it's much more important that I now have real creep speeds and the other stuff. It's a usability issue.

It's not that I'm sticking up for the thing despite it's faults...it's just that a trade-off was made and I agree with the ideas behind it.

Anyway, I would never call it a great lens unconditionally. By that criteria, it's a "barely serviceable" lens. But I call it a great lens for the camera at the price point.

Wel, you haven't found one stephenlnoe:) I have a JVC (which rents impressively well!) but I haven't done format tests with lenses. But I have tried a Fujinon S13x4.6 with an acm adapter for and it was a lot better. It was bought on Ebay for something like 3000 euro. It had wider usable range than the bundled lens actually. Not much abberation in wide, no loss of contrast in zoom, you do get what you pay for. I wish someone would test some broadcast lenses. But even if they were available for rental somewhere that would cost a lot of money. We know everything about all other categories of lenses but not broadcast and cine lenses. Anyone working for a rental house? ;)

Some things I noticed on the budled lens:

Pretty bad above 10x. Ends up lost in abberations and low contrast at full zoom. The lens should stop at 12x or something. Wide angle is not very wide and has 4-5pixel abberations in corners and sperical distortion. Mid zoom it is very nice. 25-50mm is ok.

I used those settings today, however I kept the sharpness at -5.

I'm getting this issue, anyone know what I'm doing wrong. This circles have like ring worm effect going on. I Never seen this on my other cameras inlcuding SD ones... Is this a clipping issue..

Yeah the batteries are a good deal!

hi there
I just got a new jvc 101 and a had some problems with focusing. even though i adjusted the back focus, the lens seems to have problems -with low light and iris wide open- to keep the focus, when I zoom in and than back. the wide shots seems to be out of focus....
did anybody have similar experience?
it only happens with a open iris.

plus, the focus assist seems not to be always excately. the high-lightened lines, especially in a wide angel shot, indicate a bigger depth of field, that there really is. this syndrom happens again, especially with iris wide open.

so I ask again, if anybody made similar experiences?
