Are 2 Gigs of RAM enough to play HD smooth?

The footage I have from the HVX stutters heavily. I have a hyperthreaded P 4 with 3.067 GHz and wondered, if the addition of another gig would do the trick?

What software are you using to play it? IF you are on PC you are probably using Avid, Edius Broadcast or Raylight to convert to VFW avi. OR you could be using the P2 viewer software. LEt us know. I can play back footage on my 3.2 GHZ HP laptop in P2 viewer software, fullscreen at what appears to be full frame rate.

However .avi files created using Raylight on a dual xeon 3.06GHZ PC with 2 gigs of RAM plays back horrible at the best setting.

GIve us some more info and we'll try to help.

That's really interesting Icicle... my mobile pentium 1.7 ghz laptop plays back horribly with the p2 viewer: about 1 frame per 2 seconds... With raylight on the highest setting, it does a little better, but still only about 1 frame per second...

I'd love to get to the bottom of what I can do to get close to real time playback!

I have newer Diamond Max whaever 9 Harddrive, I suppose 5400 RPM, but they should not have problems to deliver 12.5 MB (100 MBit) and even way less for WMV. So I suppose it's that the Media Player is to slow.

Although you can pencil out the specs and 12.5MB/s drive should be able to handle 100Mb [10MB/s] but they don't.

If you want smooth real time streams of DVCProHD you need to RAID at least two 7200RPM drives. HD is an I/O pig!

On the PC side of things if your using the viewer your lucky to get full frame rate... I think we just gotta wait till the codecs come out for each NLE before we can expect much outside Avid.
