How to shoot overcrank 30P for 24P timeline in Final Cut

The DVX Book by Barry Green, on page 33, says that with the DVX100 you can overcrank: you can shoot in 30P mode, then play at 80% slow motion in a 24P timeline and get perfectly clean slow motion.
The problem is that as far as I can tell in Final Cut, I have no way of capturing 30P. No matter what, Final Cut captures my 30P footage as standard NTSC 60i/29.97 frame rate.
Final Cut will capture my 24PA footage imports at 23.97 when I use advanced pulldown removal capture setting.
But no matter what capture setting I seem to use, the 30P footage is imported as 60i/29.97.

And the 80% slow motion of my clip looks jittery in the 24P timeline instead of the frame for frame that it should be.
Can anyone provide me the proper procedure for importing 30P footage to get the true overcrank slow motion effect?

The book does not discuss the proper capture settings/procedure for this effect.
Thanks.

Capturing 30p is no different than capturing 60i. So it should be 29.97. In Premiere I capture my 30p, import it into a 24p project. And I don't remove the 2:3 pulldown. I play the clip at 80% and it looks smooth. This might be different in FCP. Give it a shot.

I figured out how I can create a capture setting of 30 frames, and in the advanced capture settings, select progressive over interlaced. This would seem to be the proper setiing to capture 30P footage.
Yet after capturing it, in the project window listing all my clips, it shows that the frame rate is 29.97. Weird. I wonder why there is no indication of whether the cilp is 30P or 60i/29.97.
Also, when capturing 24PA advanced pulldown removal capture setting, the frame rate ends up as 23.97. The preset which Final Cut provides for this capture setting indicates that it is interlace (again, this shows up in the advanced settings under capture settings). Why would this be? I assumed (and hoped) that I was shooting true 24P (progressive), not 23.98 f/s interlaced. What gives?
I shot my project with DVX100 in 24PA hoping to edit in a 24P timeline, with possibility of transfer to film or to 24P DVD. I shot a few scenes at 30P, intending to shoot overcrank for 80% slow motion as the DVX100 book indicates.
But at this stage of capturing my footage, I'm unclear on proper settings. Can someone help?

i think 23.97 is the same as a 24 timeline..if you have final cut set to actual 24 then i think the audio has to be rendered...29.97 is also relative to 30, they just call it 24 and 30 because it's simpler...

i'm a complete novice when it comes to using this camera, so forgive me for asking such basic question. But I read the stuff about slow motion in Barry's book. Page 33. And I can't figure out how to record 30 fps. I'm using F1, does that record 30 fps or do I have to change that in the Menu options? Also, is there anything special I need to do when importing to Fincal Cut. (Also, it's Final Cut Express, no snickering please!) Any help would be very much appreciated. Thx

Dave

23.976 is the exact framerate of 24fps. There is that difference because of sound, and it dates back to when to when color was introduced. Just import the footage as progressive into FCP and you should be able to slow it down in your timeline.

Capture in 24 Advanced 2:3:3:2, edit in 23.98 timeline for 24PA (F6)
Capture in 29.97 Progressive and dump into 23.98 timeline, slow down and voila!

Okay. Thx. What frame rate is captured when you have Progressive turned to off? And when I dump the footage into the time line is that automatically a 23.98 timeline or do I need to make those changes in FCP. Thx for your help.

nyc321,
F1 on the DVX records 60i interlaced video. It gives you that local news video look. It's 60 fields combined to make 30 frames, for a framerate of 29.97 when captured into your computer. This is what is recorded when you have progressive turned off.
You can change this in the settings and make F1 shoot 60i, 30p, 24p, or 24pa. All the settings can be changed and saved in the camera. They can also be returned back to their default settings at any time.

The frame rate of 30p is 29.97.

You have to tell your editor that you want a 24p project. It won't decide for you.

Just remember that all the footage from the dvx is recorded at 29.97. So you can record with any settings, capture normally, edit in a 29.97 timeline, and everything will look great, grand, wonderful. Or you can shoot 24p, capture, remove the pulldown, edit on a 23.97 timeline, and make a 24p dvd, or go out to film.

All of this is covered in detail in the book. Give it another read. Barry explains it better than I do.
