How do I put P2 files back onto the cards/camera?

Hi all:

Uh oh, cannot make this one work.

1. Shot 720 24Pn footage.
2. Dumped P2 footage into P2 store
3. Downloaded P2 store onto G5 drive and backed up to dual layer DVD as a 2nd backup.
4. Need to transfer 720 24PN footage back onto P2 cards to camera can make TC dub of 720 24PN footage for off line on Mac-based AVID XPress DV that doesn't support P2 at all.

When I try to drag the P2 footage back onto cards that are mounted in camera from Mac desktop, all I get is "the item xxxxx could not be moved because "No Name" could not be modified. All of the P2 cards and the P2 store show up on the Mac desktop as "No Name".

I thought Barry or someone reported back that you could move P2 footage from the computer back onto the P2 cards? Anyone have any ideas how?

Can't think of another way to record the 720 24PN footage back to DV with TC intact.

Help!

Dan

I've done it on the PC, no problem.

On the Mac, there are some rights issues (the Mac insists that P2 cards are read-only). So if you know how to change those rights issues in Mac OS (I know NOTHING about Mac OS yet!) then you should be able to do what you're asking.

I don't know how the P2 Store works with your G5, but I was able to copy a backed up P2 from a Firewire drive through a G4 laptop without any problem. I opened up my archived files and found the "Contents" folder. (Hopefully you've just reformatted the P2 card(s) in the camera before inserting into the laptop.) Open the P2 Card alias on the desktop and copy everything inside the archive "Contents" folder into the "Contents" folder located in the P2 folder.

Barry, I thought you had already posted something about how to record out to the P2 cards. Can't you just treat the HVX as a deck.

You can "crash record" to it through the firewire, as an AV/C device. But he's asking how to copy the cards over as if it's an SBP2 hard disk. And I can do that on the PC no problem. I think it's just that somehow on the Mac you have to change the read-only status and then you should be able to do it just fine.

Hi all:

KCFilms, you rock! Never overlook the obvious. I was trying to drag and drop the files. KC's suggestion about copying was the right way of doing it. Works like a charm, just brought back a file from DVD+R DL, uploaded it back to card and it is happily playing back on the camera. Perfect! Man, this IT workflow takes some getting used to, but once you do, it works very well.

I can now shoot, load to the P2 store as I shoot, download the files off of the P2 to archival FW drive and DVD+R DL, then later come back upload back to the camera and dub my TC accurate DV tapes for off-line.

Awesome, you guys are the best,

Dan

Speaking of which, is that a typo in the manual? When you are dubbing out P2 content to HD, in the dub menu, it gives you the choice to record back 24PN content to DV using "P" (2:3) or PA (2:3:3:2, I think?, don't have the manual here at home). I think in the manual is says to pick between P and PN but the menus say P or PA.

Just wondering. Which would you choose if you had shot 720 24PN and were going back to DV for off-line?

Dan

I wouldn't do an off-line, I'd edit in the native 720p. Especially if using a Mac; 720p just flies on the Mac.

If dubbing for editing in a 24p timeline, no doubt about it choose 24PA. If dubbing for something that you'll edit in a 60i timeline, choose 24P.

Hi Barry:

Thanks for the clarifications on the typo.

Cannot edit HD on our AVID Xpress DV Pro systems on G4s, they only handle DV. On my FCP system, I am flying with 720 24P but in my regular job, we have eight Xpress Pro systems for off-line and a recently acquired Symphony Nitris for on-line. Kind of almost wish we had PC based Xpress Pro systems instead, then we could handle some flavors of HD.

Best,

Dan

Ah. Yes, well that does complicate things. The Mac version should be out in a few months and your problems will then go away, but between now and then I guess you'd have to do an offline...

I don't know if anyone else has solved this issue definitively yet, but I thought I'd post my experience with this.

The issue I'm dealing with involves a P2 card that was used to record an interview. There were no errors on the card or camera during the interview or when the footage was transferred to a hard drive.

However, when trying to import the footage into FCP, on one of the cards I get one of the "files may be missing or corrupted" error messages that we all hate so much. So I've been wanting to transfer the file back to the card to see if I can load it back into the camera and repair it.

When I'm working on my MacBook Pro with the camera in 1394 device mode, the P2 card is read only and cannot be modified to allow writing to the card, at least as far as I've been able to tell so far. But when I slide the card into the PC slot on my trusty G4, I can write to the card.

Has anyone figured out a way to change the permissions on the P2 card using a MacBook Pro?

I am still having problems performing this operation.

I also need to transfer 720 25PN footage from my G5 back onto P2 cards in the camera (1394 device mode). I have tried copying and pasting to the Contents Folder and have also tried to unlock the permissions of the mounted P2 device (no name) unsuccessfully. I just get "No Name" could not be modified. Any help would be much appreciated.

Did you just try a 'copy and paste' ?

Did you just try a 'copy and paste' ?

I'm not entirely sure if I read his earlier post right, but puredrifting seemed to say that instead of dragging and dropping it back onto the card, use the copy and paste commands (despite the read only status). Now if that works, that makes little to no sense to me, but if it works, well it might be a work around.

As for your MacBook Pro reference, its the same for the G5's. So far the only confirmed place I've heard that will see the cards for what they are (flash hard drives) is a G4 (and of course PCs, how the heck did that happen?).

My DP just took the camera and hit the road so I can't test that out until he comes back from the shoot. I am very intrigued to see if it works though.

cheeers.

I sure wish someone would come up with a step-by-step tutorial on how to do this; I just got done with the opening stages of a massive sales video for one of the biggest timeshare resort companies and they were all Mac. The Mac workflow seemed unnecessarily restricted! I was constantly frustrated with it -- I mean, on the PC, just drag files off the card. Drag files back onto the card. Rename the card. Format the card in the computer (and retain the name) so you never see "no name". Near as I can tell the Mac is just plain primitive when it compares to how the PC does it.

With that said, I don't know if you can copy files back to the card on the Mac at all. But you can get data back to the card if you put the camera in MCR mode and "print to video", turn off the thumbnails and you'll see the video from the timeline playing on the camera's LCD -- then just hit the VCR REC buttons and record it.

But Barry, haven't you seen those Apple commercials with the boring Bill Gates-looking guy and the hip Mac guy? Everything is better on the Mac.... :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Not from what I've seen. So far the PC seems to be substantially better for card copying/transfer/etc.

I'll probably still get a new Core 2 Duo MBP, but I'm starting to think I'll spend a lot more time in BootCamp than I thought I'd have to.
