New York City DVX user meeting

I've only heard about one of these NYC meetups and I couldn't make it. I have a lot of gear that just sits around, and I would prefer to let people put it to use and learn something than have it just sit around. Ask anyone in filmmaking -- resources and networking are the #2 way to get stuff done. (#1 is just lots of cash)

Please respond in this forum and let's get a little monthly meetup going in 2006.

I'm in NJ and definitely interested in attending.

I'm also looking for a writing partner too...PM me if this interests anyone here.

I'm out on the island, but I'd be down to come. What does one do at a meeting? It'd be cool to shoot something or have some sort of workshop that would benefit us all (lighting, sound, etc.). Maybe just shoot a 30 second spot or something and try to edit it in a day? Like a reality show challenge or something. Coffee (since you used to set em up)? Any other ideas?

Wow! I was praying someone in here would organize something like this. I live in New Jersey so I'd be glad to come to NY for a meeting. If you guys are really serious about this.. let's really do it.

Like any good meeting, we need someone to organize and set it up, I'm willing to help anyway I can. So let's do it. I'm pretty sure we can learn alot from one another.

So what is the first step..? A Place I guess..? Flynt MI, how would you want to begin to organize this. Excellent Idea for us here on the EAst Coast.

cool idea, hybrid. how about a 1 minute short 12 hour shoot-fest? I'd come to a mtg as well...

NYC meetup ideas

NYC meetup ideas

Here are some ideas for the meetup:

1. We could hang out and shoot the sh** at one of the 2,543 bars on my street (Ave A in Manhattan) and then if someone has brought sample footage or shorts or whatever, head back to the house and fire it up.

2. We could watch November or other DVX feature and pick the lighting and cinematography apart. I have the Walter Graff headshot DVD so we could watch that and discuss as well.

3. Get a formal tour of B&H and hang out looking at all the toys. B&H is only a few stops (~15 minutes) from my house. The peeps at B&H are the coolest retail staff in the universe and no doubt would be very accomodating. Last time I was there they talked my ear off and I learned a frickin' ton of stuff.

4. Head over to the Apple store in Soho and attend a free Final Cut or Photoshop class.

OK lecture time: I do what I say and say what I do. I hosted the Fahrenheit 9/11 DVD release party at my house, which was attended by the co-producer and soundtrack composer, Jeff Gibbs, who also produced Bowling for Columbine and wrote the soundtrack for that film as well. So I'm not new to hosting stuff like this. It will be a blast.

So holla back with your vote (or better idea) and we'll try to get a concensus and pick a good date.

If we could pull it off it'd be awesome to post a vid up as a NY NJ PA DVXUSER Joint. Then we could challenge other regions and have a DVXUser Group festival.....or sumpin'. Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself:) but I'd rather create something at a meeting. Whose got space in NYC or even better a studio? I agree that'd be a good place to start. And then if we're gonna shoot something, I guess we'd have to choose positions of some kind. At least a writer, director, and an editor (or a couple editors). I'd assume a bunch of us would want to shoot but maybe we could make the photography a team effort since we'd probably have a camera for each person there. (Hmmm, would that really work?)

Edit: Guess we were writing at the same time FlintMI. I know I said it'd be cool to create something, but I'm open to other ideas too. I like the watching November/Lighting DVD idea. I think the bar thing would fall apart quickly and the B&H tour would make me drool too much.:) But I'm open to whatever the group decides.

Ok. My Vote is let's do it all. I love the NJ PA NY Joint Venture theme, nice, but first things first, obviously we can't do all this in one day. Let's pick a place to meet first, then take it from there I guess.

But the key is to be organize. I'm a little confuse, I thought the purpose of organizing the meeting was to talk about the DVX and learn settings ect.. from one another. I say we have a couple of meetings getting to know one another face to face discussing the camera. Then begin working on that Joint Venture project. Imagine, between all of us and the DVX, picture the cool shots and angles we can have.

Now the question is, do we actually write a short script or do something documentary style. Just so things won't get too confusing, let's all vote and see where we stand.

My Vote is to meet First, then organize a project. And the B&H tour is pure genius.

I'd love to get a fun Region Challenge thing going on here. As you all can tell I'm excited about this, so somebody calm me down. I guess after enough votes, we need.. a date, time and location

ONe last thing, I'm pretty sure there's other people on the Forum from our region who might not read this thread.. should we elect someone to tract them down?

Later.

i'd be up for a meeting. and i really like the joint project idea. !!! sounds awesome. im still in highschool though

That sounds ok to me. I'm just afraid if all we do is get together and bs about the camera and settings and stuff, it'll get old fast and the group will fizzle. I think if we have a common goal to bring everyone together it would be easier to maintain momentum. How bout this?....

First meeting...do the B&H tour thing (even though all I'll be able to do is drool:)) and then go back to FlintMI's place (if he's still willing to host) and have everyone show some samples of each other's work. Everyone should bring a list of equipment they have access to. Then anyone who has something written can pitch and we can decide if we 1)have the resources (human and equipment) and 2) actually want to put one of them together.

Let's just keep the dialogue going for now, try to pick a date and get some more people on board. This could be very cool.

I'd be down for it. Though I have to say, I already spend so much time at B&H, a tour would just be redundant...:)

I'm definitely down for an NYC meeting. I wanted to go the Jersey meeting in December but we had a big production deadline we were struggling to finish...

meeting and hanging first would probably be the best thing to do. The problem i see and what probably happened before was that everyone has a camera, their own ideas and wants to direct so I think people become a little selfish and hold back on collaborating like this. The first NYC meeting we had there were only 2 people besides me that truly acted like they were down to do a group thing. By the responses of the others you can tell they werent really down with working on something that wasnt their own.

I just emailed Walter Graff to see if he'd be interested in coming and he said: "That sounds great Ray. Let me know if the group wouldn't mind me tagging along. I'd love to say hello to folks who I haven't met yet. Lots of them still email me everyday."

This sounds like a great idea. I have no friends (that are into film that is). I would prefer to just know people who do what I do and just hang out. I would love the tour of B&H and would just love to hang out and watch movies together. The project sounds good as well. Maybe we could all create characters and act in NYC (we could show how we all come together in a satirical style). I don't have a camera or equiptment though, I try to understand things and I write.
