Lucky Me...My HVX Shipping from Japan today!

Your warranty is in Japan. To get it fixed here you will have to pay for it.

Sorry,

Jan

Thanks Jan! I appreciate that helpful note.
However, I am in Europe but need the NTSC model so my Japanese seller tells me it will have a years warranty in Japan and I can send back through him if needed.
So, whether I buy in US or Japan makes no real difference to me. In fact if I could wait for it, the Japanese main dealer prices are about a 1,000 Euros less than US/Canada list prices.
Then again I could be anywhere in the world when camera may be needing repairs (touch wood I will not need any).
Anyway the HVX will never break down!

p.s. when I mention the prices in Japan are much lower - the only problem is that the main Japanese dealers may not ship internationally at all for a long time because they too have huge domestic orders.
I'm just a poor eccentric European doing everything the wrong way round and always getting stuck with the most unusual proceedures. I mean a European needing an NTSC model HVX in the first place and even before the PAL version is released in Europe... what a looney I am!

You must not be on the list. There have been 40 more orders since the list was closed on Dec. 31st, and we are not keeping track of those numbers anymore, but we are assuming we will get them taken care of along March/April. The fact is we don't know anything certain about delivery. Panasonic has not given us definitive word on anything, be it dates or numbers. It is always speculative, "You may get some cameras at this date, we may ship a bunch at the end of the month." Until I get the cameras in my warehouse, I say again, we are not sure of anything.

I don't know what you mean I'm not on the list... I'm number 81... maybe number 5,000 after this (lol)... but its funny that I say I won't get the camera until April or May... then you turn around and say almost the same thing... March/April...

Unless you mistook my line about working out the bugs... a friend of mine when I told him it looks like I won't get the camera until later... he said that was good thing... they'll get all the firmware upgrades... plus all the early adapters will tell you how to work all the issues out... I was saying it might be a good thing for me since I'd love to have the camera now... but I won't use it until April/May anyway...

Unless the guy I'm meeting this morning lets me use his Cine Alta package... knock on wood...

Ugh, I can't even tell you... Sorry about that. I fixed it to January. Been getting 4 hrs sleep every night, prepping for my training DVD.

Well then you were misinformed. If you are number 80, at this point it does not seem you have to wait that long. April/May is not the same as March/April, that is a 30-day difference. I understand that you have no problem with it, and that waiting for bugs to get worked out is good for you, but when you post that "EVS said May", everyone else who is already on their last nerve assumes that it applies to them too. And they have earlier plans. I just don't want people getting the wrong idea from the post. I have had no indication from Panasonic that it will take that long to get the cameras to dealers.

Now, I might need it sooner… the producer of the film I’m line producing just called me and now the executive producer (too many producers, lol) may want to shoot the second unit stuff in jet fighters with the HVX…

The A camera and possibly a B camera will either be the Varicam or Cine Alta... just depends on which dp we go with...

Anyone with any clues on what's the best way to shoot with just two P2 cards... the camera operator will be having to switch out cards while the plane is flying...

The only reason I ask is... please I'm not causing trouble but I've heard that there is a short demand of P2 cards... unless members with cards want to rent them to me... I figure at least 10 cards or more... that'd least give us an hour of flight time or more at 720 p....

This sounds like a good exanple where the P2 Store from Pana could be useful. Assuming it is not too big to have next to you or on your belt while in the Jet you could offload to the hard drive while you shoot with another card. You'd still want more than 2 but 10 would not be necessary. The beauty of this is that it offloads the footage, verifies it is intact and formats the card for the next batch of filming. Try doing this inside that fighter with an assistant cameraman with a powerbook. It's not gonna happen. And though I can't personally afford the P2 store I would bet $1800 to get these fighter shots doesn't seem so outrageous anymore.

The only thing is... isn't the p2 storage a hard drive... there'd be a lot of movement in the plane... ... I know when I was at EVS last week... they had a guy come in with one of the hard drive units (not FS)... the guy from the company said he didn't think that a hard drive would hold up from all the movement...

Might have to go to a HDV camera for the stuff in a plane... I was just hoping to lower the cost of my purchase...

Have to talk to a friend who used to shoot stuff in the Air Force during the first Gulf War and see what ideas he has... I know once he'd told me he wishes they had the DVX back then... it was murder shooting with a Betacam while being in the backseat of a fighter jet... the upside of that... this guy can hold hand held forever... well almost....

If the plane is doing some fast maneuvers then I could see that being a problem. I hadn't thought about that. Good Luck!

Do you foresee needing more than 22 minutes of recording per run (2 cards)? I didn't think those guys stayed up there that long... I used to shoot acrobatic stuff, and we were up there, like 12-13 minutes before we had to refuel. If that's the case, you can offload to a P2-store from the cards, or a Maxtor HDD directly from the camera, when you get back on the ground.

Thanks for the information about refueling...

That's the thing I don't know how long they stay up... that's something I'd like to find out...

After reading the script I suggested to the producer that we could rent the smaller cameras to fit within the cockpit...

She was told that we didn't have to worry about any of the plane scenes... of course now we might have to help out...

A lot will also be done with CGI... so maybe shooting 22 minutes for two cards and off loading them when the plane refuels wouldn't be a bad idea... plus they have a Harry so they could use that to maybe bump it up from 720p to 1080p...

We have a meeting with everyone next week to work all these issuses...

Thanks for the information...

Hi Norm,
Just curious...did you get your camera yet?
I'm dying to hear how it's working out....we're still waiting for our 1 demo model.
Keep us posted. Thanks!
