Why I am not getting mine with P2

It seems as if everyone wants the two 8 gig P2 option.

I figure, if they have that kind of money to burn, I will just get mine with no cards, and then wait a few months. All of the guys with 4 gig or 8 gig cards will be upgrading, and I should be able to get them at that time for half price.

1. They will be used.
2. The price will drop quickly as does all electronic media in demand.

Humm, maybe there is a market for buying and selling new and used P2 cards.

If you dont need to shoot HD and DVCPRO50, sure just wait.

The reason everybody wants p2 is so they can start right away to shoot 1080p and 720p

but not all that buy the hvx gonna need that. But me as a happy DVX owner, im gonna wait with the whole cam.

you can also "shoot" 720p and record to DV.
16:9 chips, 50p/60p slomo. that is actually a cool feature right now without P2.

I don't think that is accurate. 480P to DV tape....just tlike the DVX. The 720P mode is a hi def mode and therefore requires the P2 card (or in the future a firestore). You can apparently sample that down to DV "after" the initial recording from the P2 to tape drive in SD. Maybe Barry or someone else can verify and elaborate on this.

I am just tring to stop anyone from actually thinking that 720P is possible on DV tape on the HVX.

PEace!

Icicle is right.
You can downconvert to DV tape in camera AFTER recording 720P, but NOT WHILE recording.

To record DVCPro50 or any flavor of HD on the HVX you need to either use P2 cards, or some form of external hard drive recording. No way around it.

oops. of course. i got taken away by my daydreams there......sorry.
of course you need at least 1 P2 card to record the slomo first....

Can you not plug into a laptop and capture via Final Cut on the fly, instead of using P2?

Yes, you can capture the HD stream directly from the firewire port onto a computer (via FCP or something similar) OR an 'intelligent' Hard Drive device like the upcoming FireStore.

Perhaps a clarification is in order.

None of us "WANT" the P2 cards, and certainly not at that price. However, many of us "NEED" the P2 cards despite that price. Many of us are hoping to get 2 to 4 of the four gig cards at a much better price though. We'll see what becomes available.

There are some of use that do live recoding stuff and red carpet events and interviews and such where it just isn't practical to drag around a laptop with you. It's that type stuff and ENG work that I think Panasonic is really targeting with this inovation. Those weekend warrior filmmaker types is just an added bonus for them.

What will be interesting to see is whether it becomes possible to just rent the P2 Cards on the rare times you absolutly have to have them, and do so at a reasonable price. That might be a question to pose to Rush at EVS and Tom or Jim over at Birns.

Um... some of us do. P2 is danged cool. I most definitely want as many as I can get, in as large a capacity as possible. They're really, really, cool!

I'm not going to be buying any P2 cards for a while. I'll probably only use dvcpro50 and HD when i want to shoot green screen. I'm gonna wait for the firestore to come out or possibly buy a 12" powerbook if that will do the job.

Will I be able to change frame rates while shooting to tape? I'm gonna be filming for a BMX video and I realise that its not practical shooting in HD for this but it would be cool to bump the frame rate for some nice slomo shots.

I'm with Barry on this one.
I for one WANT P2 cards.

Sure I wish they were larger capacity and lower in price...but that's the case with everything.
I wish the Firestore were bigger and cheaper too....I wish the HVX were (okay not bigger) cheaper...

you get the point.
There are many advantages to P2 technology, and I for one can't wait to exploit it to the fullest.

Why would I sell my old P2 cards for less then the going rate for a new 8 gig card? It's not like there is a maximum amount of P2 cards to own. Sure, we will get the higher capacity when they come out but we will still hold onto the old ones to switch out with them. We are examining cost per gig, not per card. A gig is gig is a gig. When the price per gig is less for the larger cards then so shall the used price on smaller capacity cards drop per gig.

To put it another way, I will only sell my two 8 gig cards when the sale price for those 2 will equal the cost of a one 16 gig. Otherwise I will just hold onto them until I have an excessive amount of P2 cards...if that could ever happen.

On the other hand, you can certainly save money by waiting until 16 gig comes out and the price of new 8 gig cards drops. I just don't think you will find many used 8 gig cards selling for significantly less then the the new ones that are available.

Best

I plan on renting P2 cards based upon the work flow of the project. I would rather rent 2 or 3 high capacity cards as needed and consider purchasing once I have established what we might need on a daily basis.

Same here....I'll rent until prices come down, you either have to be a cash cow or plan on doing work every weekend in order to pay for the cost of P2 currently.

Can a 12in Powerbook even capture DVCPRO HD reliably? They come with a 5400rpm drive and DVCPRO HD is 100Mbps, which is 12.5MBps right? Sorry if I am rehashing old questions but I couldn't find any good answers on a search.

Thanks,

Sorry, I've got to throw my opinion in for this one, too. I think P2 is the best thing about the HVX - more important than HD acquisition and more important than DVCPRO50. Tapeless is the future, and P2 is an amazing way to acheive that. The only deterrent for some people right now is the price, but think of it this way - would you rather be tethered to a laptop or a FireStore hard drive when you can just throw a piece of solid state memory in the back of the camera with no moving parts and shoot away? There's no question, to me, that P2 will change the way a lot of people work. Please don't make ignorant blanket statements like "none of us want P2 cards." Maybe you don't, but some of us can see the superior advantage they offer.

Hi,
The updated Apple powerBooks 15 and 17" laptops now come with 7200 rpm drives option and a 800 firewire port.
I presume this is now capable of recording from the HVX200 directly to the 100 gig hard drive, can anyone verify this please?
Will the HVX200 be fitted with an 800 firewire now that they're out on the new powerBooks or will it be the older 400 port?
I think there is also a PCiX card that needs to be fitted to the powerbook, maybe called a 'Luna' for editing in native HD with Final Cut Pro. Will FCP support the HVX200 immediately when the cameras are delivered or will there be delays?
Certainly the price of the powerBook jumps up alot! when you add the cost of upgrading to 2 gigs of ram, plus the graphics card, the hard drive upgrade, the FCP software.... wow!
Also the screens are just below the HD quality resolution still, but I presume will suffice for editing and basic quality controls..?
I could certainly wait a while for the fantastic P2 cards, if it will record properly to my new powerBook g4 by firewire 400 or 800. I will be shooting mostly in situation which can allow for connection to the laptop if this is the case - appreciate any information on this!

Haakon, I'm with you on the whole P2 front. The HD part of the camera is really cool. Same the the frame rates. But shooting to P2 and not having to digitize my footage is what I'm really looking forward to. Plus no dropouts like in tape. I cannot express how much I hate tape. I plan on getting the HVX 2 8GB P2 card bundle. That to me will be money well spent because it will save me time.

Also now I can show the footage right on the shoot without having to worry about there being a timecode break. I know I should black my tapes before but I don't like to record anything onto a tape except the footage I'm trying to get. Plus I can use the HVX as a playback deck and not worry about wearing out the heads. P2 is the only way to go. 16min on each card in 720p 24P is more than enough for the stuff I want to do.

It's FW400. 800 would be extreme overkill, and would necessitate different cabling, etc. The HVX is going to have the same firewire port on it that the DVX does, etc. DVCPRO-HD has a maximum data rate of 100 megabits per second, so FW100 would be adequate; FW400 is more than enough.

If you're running FCP-HD on that Powerbook, it should be able to capture directly from the HVX.

Ask around in some FCP forums and see if you can find anyone who's used that class of computer to capture from an AJ-HD1200A deck. If they have, then you can probably be assured it'll work from the HVX also.
