Filming for Broadcast - 720x486 Question & Stuff

Hi;

I will be shooting for broadcast on television, and I've read that the resolution to pull DV into your NLE (Adobe Premiere) should be at 720x486. Is this correct?

If so, it seems my desktop won't go to that high resolution. I'm guessing because my video card is not advanced enough? Could that be it? If so, anyone have any recommendations on a recommended video card?

How about overall system specs for a new PC desktop? Any recommendations would be appreciated!

OK, my next question: How do people make backups of their DV tapes? Do you typically just make another copy of the tape to another tape using a deck? What's the best way to do this - I don't want to use the DVX as a playback system!

How about making DVD's - the only problem with that is that - the file sizes are huge, when converting to the 720x486 AVI files?

What to do?
Thanks much!

There has been a detailed discussion on the image dimensions somewhere here...

If I recall it correctly, it's 720x480 for DV no matter what. The 486 includes extra six lines that are in standard TV broadcast (648x486), but they don't need to be included in your DV.

I don't make DV backups, but I guess from workflow POV it makes more sense to use a deck and go tape to tape. If you just capture the whole tape as an AVI, you would need four DVDs to back it up. I think that's too expensive at this point of technology development.

Naeem - 486 is SD resolution - DV is 480. No need to worry bout those 6 lines. If you capture DV through firewire it will only capture 720x480 if I remember correctly. I'm sure I'll be corrected if wrong.

As far as backing up tapes, I don't do it.
I digitize all of the footage I need for the edit then store the tapes in a fireproof safe.
I never look at the tapes again after digitizing them unless something happens to the files on my computer.
After editing my project (PremierePro 1.5) I then use the "Project Manager" to create a "New Trimmed Project" which consist of only the clips used in the project. I burn that "Project" folder to a DVD or two or three as my backup.

My NLE system only works at 720x486 and all the time I digitize DV footage via firewire or component without problems. I guess if I record the final editing to DV tape it will be 720x480, if I recorded to Betacam tape, it will be 720x486, so I believe you can record your material in a betacam tape for broadcast without problems.

Standard Definition analog NTSC is 720X480i. This is the visible display area on a 4:3 aspect TV. There are actually more lines attached to your analog picture which is called the vertical interval or video blanking area. This is where things like time code, closed captioning and metadata information is encoded. Not to worry your NLE handles all of that. If you want to edit your tape in your NLE and put the finished product back to tape I would recommend the the DV2500 deck from Panasonic. It's mini dv and has DV in(IEEE1394). I would recommend this for feeding or recording your DVX projects as it will save wear and tear on the camera.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I need to make backups, because I will have 2 editors working on the project. Although I supposed I can simply digitize the whole 1 hour tape, and share the AVI files.

Does it really take 4 DVDs for a full digital feed of the whole video (AVI file)? I thought it might have been more than that?

Also, btw, XCheck, believe me I know about saving cost whereever possible, but DVD's are like 25 cents a piece (Amazon), so it woudl cost you $1 to make a backup (plus time) - that's pretty reasonable!

I need to try capturing using Premiere, I was capturing using Nero UltraSeek, maybe that's why I was having trouble getting the higher rez of 720, it would only let me save bring in the DV at 480? I hope that it's a Nero problem, and not my Video Card!

btw, I'm in Monetery, CA shooting a video this weekend. Got on the plane last night..., and guess what I forgot at home...MY TRIPOD! So I've been shooting by hand, looks like it should be ok..., but man this things gets heavy after a while!!

Does anyone know of any kinda support gear, that helps in this situation. I need to look into this asap.

Thx
