Ben Affleck & Salvatore Totino ASC, AIC take the Sony BURANO for a spin around LA

I'm surprised Sony included Salvatore hanging out the window (04:24) and just slapped a "don't try this at home" while it happened.

The whole thing just feels like they were forced to do it. It's still helpful seeing more Burano configurations and looks cool but no breakaway rialto equivalent seems like it'd haunt you if you purchased one.

They were so forced to do it that Sony set the YouTube to that page to disabled commenting so Affleck wouldn't bad mouth the camera in the comments.

It's pretty cool how extremely hands on and across all the tech Affleck is. It just seems funny since Affleck is a complete unicorn (making films at the highest level (size wise, not necessarily quality)) and could shoot any project on anything and there'd be an audience.

They're talking about the benefits of the burano vs. venice II for car interiors while driving. Re dynamic range, CineD claim burano outperforms venice ii in certain modes (I had no idea). That's fair enough, as well as ND/stabilisation add even more things to take into consideration. But for size, wouldn't the Venice ii be the winner after separating the body, even after adding a larger monitor than the burano's LCD screen? He could've probably got the sitting on the window sill shot with a venice ii while staying seated.

I have a buddy with a Burano. He pre-ordered last year and got his pretty much as soon as they started shipping earlier this year. He absolutely loves it. I think it’s in kind of a weird spot and with some annoying gotchas, but I like most of the images I’ve seen from it.

I have become cynical about DR claims, that the 10 stop Nikon D9 and 16 stop Sony Burano are only 1/2 stop apart in Imatest. We've given over looking at patch charts with our own eyes to computer analysis that takes into account rms noise. It opened up new avenues to cheat the test because now all they have to do it bake in NR that you can't turn off. It seems all the FF sensors have more or less converged to the same point and testing has become irrelevant if it can't be reliable.

Yeah, nothing wrong with the image. It just seems like it's way too expensive to have things that piss you off about it. Riding on the venice ii coat tails is smart, I just anecdotally don't get the sense it'll take off but this could be a huge misread.

I've never really paid too much attention to DR cause I've never been in a position where it's been an important decision. It's more like reading in the background. I love cinematography articles or acceptance speeches where someone says they went with arri because of the DR, it's always like what a bold choice!

they made the video private
EDIT I updated the link with scene removed

What a joke! You and I could've done a better campaign, except it'd turn into showing how good the venice ii is for car shooting. 4 tiny body extensions rigged completely out of sight, tethered to main bodies in the trunk or inside one of those pods/boxes on roof racks.

haha, for sure. It's cool they are trying something different and what not, but that piece didn't really appeal to me.

I/we know the footage is compressed and ungraded (or barely graded), but it just looked so mediocre for a camera that expensive.

Showing the DR in the car didn't make sense to me because I've had lesser cameras hold the same type of range. It really depends on the day; you just don't know what it's really like unless you see another camera in the car at the same time that's really hot or completely blowing out and then you can compare.

What a mess. Those responsible should be embarrassed.
A good reminder that the best tools are useless if put into the wrong hands. And these are the wrong hands.

Sony: Ben, we'll pay you to promote the Burano.
Ben: OK, I have a half hour on Tuesday. We can drive around LA or something.
Sony: Great!

They weren't going for anything cinematic or with emotion so we do have to keep that in mind...it was more of a day-in-the-life, doc, walk-and-talk type thing.

I've seen driving around from other cameras or other extremely simple filming where nobodies just made everything look so good (all kinds of cameras).

That's just a comment from a kid, no $25K camera can "suck". It will have strengths and weaknesses, which will vary for people, productions.

One may argue the price, but anything will cost as much as people are willing to pay.

Here's the review from Gerald Undone
I don't want to watch somebody else's 24 minute video. Please summarize the reasons why YOU posted that the Burano sucks. Bullet points will be fine, but if you'd care to elaborate on any particular point, that would be most helpful. Thanks in advance.

PS. And don't forget to tell us which other cameras you think are better at that price point, or even lower?

The Burano was a breakthrough for cramming both the eVND and IS into an E-Mount. Looking forward to that combo trickling down to other price points.

In 2024 I almost can't even watch reviews from people who aren't working in the field. Not on a high horse and not commenting on skill since some people in their basements are exceptionally talented, but the YTer only reviews are left with no choice but to focus on hyper technical details, with zero insight into a bigger picture (working with the tools).

Gerald mentions Robert Machado's Burano video, he's about as good as it gets for a working pro also reviewing gear and I assume will be bang on for an overview:
